BAGHDAD: Iraqi security forces lost 2,300 Humvee armored vehicles when ISIS overran the northern city of Mosul, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday.
"In the collapse of Mosul, we lost a lot of weapons," Abadi said in an interview with Iraqiya state TV. "We lost 2,300 Humvees in Mosul alone."
While the exact price of the vehicles varies depending on how they are armored and equipped, it is clearly a hugely expensive loss that has boosted ISIS's capabilities.
Last year, the State Department approved a possible sale to Iraq of 1,000 Humvees with increased armor, machineguns, grenade launchers, other gear and support that was estimated to cost $579 million.
Clashes began in Mosul, Iraq's second city, late on June 9, 2014, and Iraqi forces lost it the following day to ISIS, which spearheaded an offensive that overran much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland....

So, the sale would have been $500 Thousand per Humvee. Isn’t that a little high even by government standards?
At this price they should have had a remote self destruct feature.
We seem to all be gathered in one big Obama clown car.
An industry that can charge about as much for one aircraft as they do for a gigantic aircraft carrier can probably get away with just about anything.
Military Humvees start below $100k. Armor, armament and “support”, not to mention transportation are going to add up. I’m sure ISIS will figure them out.
“How hard would it be to hide a special chip in these vehicles attached to a small explosive to be activated when stolen?”
Blo-jack.
Exactly.
WTFBH! Incredibly irresponsible waste or pre-planned to arm his buddies in ISIS.
I think any explosive on a friendly would be unsettling. How about a tracking chip? That way the vehicle pings an ID and can be targeted, if need be.
'Course, now they don't have to be driven "up-armored". :-/
Hope they had insurance.
I've thought about that often. As it is now ISIS ends up with them.
Well, it's lucky for us that we can print money to pay for them and not take a financial hit when they are stolen and blown up. Just add it to the tab. Federal Government financial accounting is extraordinarily special. Especially with so much off the books, almost like a criminal enterprise.
Using the above figures - 1,000 units @ $579m - $579,000 per unit. (seems a tad high for fleet sales)
2,300 units ‘lost’ @ $579,000 = $1.331B and change? (BILLION)
Damn, I'd like to be the Humvee dealer for the replacements.
With the presence of IEDs additional explosives onboard might not be a good idea.
O$hithead air-dropped the keys to ISIS after they overran the Iraqis.
Agreed. Not one more dime for these useless cowardly savages.

When I was in, jeeps didn’t have “keys” just a starter button on the floor. To secure them, we’d chain and padlock the steering wheel.
You can make your own “Urban Gorilla” HUMVEE look alike:

Lost 2300 humvees? LOST? “Achmed, where are the cars? I thought they were over here.”
Damn, I’d like to be the Humvee dealer for the replacements.
Must be a democrat for that
