BAGHDAD: Iraqi security forces lost 2,300 Humvee armored vehicles when ISIS overran the northern city of Mosul, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday.
"In the collapse of Mosul, we lost a lot of weapons," Abadi said in an interview with Iraqiya state TV. "We lost 2,300 Humvees in Mosul alone."
While the exact price of the vehicles varies depending on how they are armored and equipped, it is clearly a hugely expensive loss that has boosted ISIS's capabilities.
Last year, the State Department approved a possible sale to Iraq of 1,000 Humvees with increased armor, machineguns, grenade launchers, other gear and support that was estimated to cost $579 million.
Clashes began in Mosul, Iraq's second city, late on June 9, 2014, and Iraqi forces lost it the following day to ISIS, which spearheaded an offensive that overran much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland....

If this is true, nobody was protecting the perimeter, or...

600 plus million? Really?
No doubt many of those Humvees will be used as suicide weapons in the coming battle of Baghdad.
May be those expensive “up-armored” ones.
Im totally finished with these people. They are not woth $1 more. Lets get out and stay out!
Im totally finished with these people. —
bo, and his ilk.
Zero has no one protecting perimeters anywhere!
How hard would it be to hide a special chip in these vehicles attached to a small explosive to be activated when stolen?
No sweat, we’ll buy more. Send over some troops, do some re-training, rinse and repeat.
Not hard at all. But the US government could never keep the secret.
Cluster.
It had to be intentional, I mean if you are bugging out, would you ditch your vehicle and retreat on foot? It makes no sense.
Obama should just ship weapons and supplies to ISIS and eliminate the middle man.
Military grade Lojack!
That ought to be standard military issue. Incorporate it in the essential electronics and seal it in a tamperproof enclosure.
I would definitely require it in tanks, helicopters, manpads, etc. I would also incorporate GPS into it so the asset could not be smuggled out of the theater. We don’t need manpads here!
This would be bad enough if we were talking soccer balls but weaponized trucks. Why the hell do we offer people who won’t fight for themselves all the guns, ammo and equipment they could give away. Hell they could run ISIS flat with 2,300 humvees.
That's exactly what I was thinking. In fact, if you've got humvees and they don't, wouldn't that give you a distinct advantage in street battles if you're protecting [the city] from an invading force?
Stolen? More like left unattended with FREE signs in windows.
What does 2300 humvees COST?..
