American Express President Dies Suddenly On Flight From Japan To New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –– Ed Gilligan, the president of American Express, has died.

He was 55 years old.

Gilligan died after becoming ill on a flight from Japan to New York.

Gilligan was named the company’s president two years ago and joined American Express in 1980 while still a student at New York University, according to the Wall Street Journal.

He was widely considered a possible successor to CEO Ken Chenault, WSJ reported.

Chenault made the announcement via a letter to Amex employees Friday:

With the heaviest of hearts, I must share some devastating news. Ed Gilligan – President of our company and friend and inspiration to many inside and outside American Express – became seriously ill on a flight home to New York this morning and has passed away.

This is deeply painful and frankly unimaginable for all of us who had the great fortune to work with Ed, and benefit from his insights, leadership and enthusiasm. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Lisa, and their four children – Katie, Meaghan, Kevin and Shane. He was a proud husband and father, and his love for his family was evident in all that he did.

Gilligan died after becoming ill

That's strange wording for something like this. Usually, they say "suffered a fatal heart attack" or something like that. What sort of "illness" kills you within a matter of hours?

What are they supposed to do if a passenger falls ill somewhere over the middle of the Pacific? Not lots of options there.

Japan to NY would probably go over the pole. Even less options.....

Possible too. I think these cabins are mainly pressurized to ~10,000 feet.

All I know is that the Indians that AMEX outsources their customer service to are top notch.

The best of the best, unlike the Indians and Filipinos working for a most of the multinationals.

This poor guy passing is a shame.

All American multi national corporations need to start bringing the customer service jobs back to the US.

Recent advances in computer technology means that these are now jobs that competent retired people, housewives, and competent people on welfare can do.

AMERICA FOR AMERICANS!

RIP GILLIGAN

“Dead Bankers update.”

Interesting...I guess the food on airplanes is not even safe if you happen to be in the class of people who are having “black” justice applied to them.

“What is the purported reason for all the dead bankers?”

I’d guess that it’s a serious fight between the buyers and sellers on Forex exchange. Yen buyers creamed dollar sellers last night, so expect more dead German bankers next week, unless the Swiss franc rises 4% the first week of June. If that’s the case, then look for at least 2,500 English High Street mid-managers hanging dead from Barclay’s 29th floor windows in London by the end of September. Libor manipulation will crash 55% then, adding an extra five bucks to your personal wealth.

Hope this helps. :-)

"American Express President Dies Suddenly On Flight From Japan To New York"

I assume he was distraught when he discovered he'd left his AMEX card at home.

I think that might be it. Deep vein thrombosis.

Sitting for hours on a plane can be deadly.

IIRC 10k ft is the max. Normal is 8k, and most keep 6k for comfort.
