After Violent Weekend, Emanuel Says Stronger Gun Laws Needed
CBS Local Chicago ^ | May 26, 2015 | unattributed CBS

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he’s been in touch with the families of the dozen people killed by gunfire this weekend, including a four-year-old girl. He also talked to reporters and police about the more than three dozen people wounded as well, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

Mayor Emanuel attended a luncheon honoring police officers for valor and service above and beyond the call and he acknowledged this was a weekend with far too many shootings and deaths.

He says it will take more than police officers to quell the violence, it will take community action and it will take stronger gun laws.

“It is not just about how many police you have, it is about the quantity of guns that are on the street so we actually have gun laws that back up the men and women we just recognized,” Emanuel said.

But that requires action from Springfield where lawmakers are embroiled in a budget standoff.

THOUGHT EXPERIMENT: If we accept that we need to suspend parts of the Constitution in some areas for the greater good of the larger community is the Second Amendment really the one we need to suspend?

I think a strong case could be made that the First is the one we should suspend, specifically to prohibit hip-hop in Chicago city limits. And possibly Facebook and other social media. (There was a story about two urban youths killed as pushback for a Facebook posting, there are probably more).

Chicago has it's own rap music genre, it's called "Drill". Much of the lyrical content is about guns, drug dealing. Ideology is the root of the problem, but no one is really willing to talk about that.

The role of Rap/Hip-hop in the destruction of the black minority in these urban holes can not be overestimated.

WARNING: NASTY EBONICS -- Drill Songs

Laws only affect the law abiding.

Gun laws (or any other law) has no bearing on thugs.

Yes but not in the way you mean. Emmanuel is not stupid, he has figured out how to harness hundreds of thousands of stupid people to empower himself.

Encouraging ghetto violence and then using the crisis to take guns from the law abiding is not done out of stupidity but rather a very clever malice. Once the peaceable citizenry is entirely disarmed they are completely dependent on the police (read government) for protection. People in that situation do not resist tax increases or bond levies. They do not vote for unapproved candidates and they simply accept corruption lest they wind up on the wrong side of people with a monopoly on force.

How do stronger laws impact those who don’t obey the laws?

I’d suggest the 4th. Sweep the whole place for weapons for months on end.

We can use these deaths to push for stronger gun laws. Never let a good crisis go to waste.

I wonder how many of the handguns used this weekend had been reistered?

No, Chicago needs a better class of citizens and some good leadership wouldn’t hurt for a change.

s - a - r - c - a - s - m: it’s often an effective literary device, but it needs just a little bit of cooperation from the reader.

Let’s try it this way: Any time there’s gun crime - make that EVERY time there’s gun crime - some pinhead lefty can be counted on to call for new gun laws. It always happens and it never works. Pretty much everybody on this forum knows that.

Sorry to have offended your delicate sensibilities.

One of the first new ordinances should include the requirement that EVERY household in Chicago, and every place of business, have at least one person on the premises trained in the proper use of firearms, and that a side arm of sufficient caliber to stop a would-be armed assailant be available for immediate access to either the primary designated gun user, or another on the premises that also has training in the use, firing and proper handling of the weapon.

A second ordinance would be that should an assailant be injured or killed in any exchange of gunfire, the assailant or any surviving family members could not bring suit against the person who fired the bullet that caused the grave injury or death.

Lawmaking is SO easy.

“Quantity of guns”? I guess that he is not so good at the English language: it should be “number of guns.”

But other than that, do we not see that ALL of the cities with the worst outbreaks of murders (and other criminal acts indicative of mass social disorder) are:
*run by liberals;
*populated by favored minorities;
*have very strict guns laws already.

Clearly, this is not a gun problem. It is a people problem. That could not be more obvious.
