In a deal that affects one in six American households, Charter Communications on Tuesday proposed a three-way merger with two other cable and broadband providers, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks.

Agreed. This is a scarey situation when you start seeing less & less competition in the industry. I have Charter & feel it is way overpriced for what you get already. Wait until there’s even less competition.
Consolidate, consolidate, consolidate...
Then it is easier for the government to take it over.
Getting a very good antenna and dropping cable altogether is very tempting. Around here, it's Cox. They're not one of the big three, but they're as unlikeable and overpriced.
Well I have Time-Warner. Could Charter be worse? I doubt it.
I'm getting close to doing that too. I can get 50+ channels for free with an antenna and amplifier. Combine that with Netflix, Hulu and YouTube and I have plenty of stuff to watch.
Very very bad idea.
Oh, please. Cable is a dying breed. There are a ton of cord cutters out there. It is increasingly just becoming a bandwidth commodity for AppleTV, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.
The tech is old, and will eventually be replaced by fiber, for which Google has the real first-movers advantage.
If you want to worry about monopolies, worry about Google and Apple. Worrying about the cable companies is like wringing your hands over “Ma Bell.”
But - don’t worry - the FCC will never allow the deal so Obama’s tech friends at Google and Apple can continue their march to domination.
what happens when immersive VR becomes mainstream?
I hear ya. Most of the people I know hate Charter but they’re the only provider in their vicinity.
We are in a changing world of entertainment, that’s for sure. Whatever technology takes over - whether it be immersive VR or simply 100% on-demand, micro-funded programming - cable is a dinosaur. Their coax networks can’t keep up with bandwidth demands and their outdated programming model is toast.
We don’t need no steenkin’ Anti-Trust laws.
Charter is scum and barely capable of taking care of what is has now
not too long ago, the profit per employee was - $192,000 per year. That is a negative number.
I will stay with Comcast. I have luckily had zero problems with them. The only thing that I would change is if Verizon Fios comes to the neighborhood because I had them before and loved them even more then Comcast.
lol. Yeah the cord cutters who are going to get screwed when they put a limit on how much data you can use a month and then they will be sorry. Currently they are talking 250 a month. That is not much especially as you stream movies. It will eventually cost more just for having cable.
The more important question is: what *would* have happened to Ma Bell if the feds just left well enough alone?
Landline phone companies are dying, too...
Bandwidth is a commodity. They can meter usage all they want. It just makes the field that much more ripe for fiber sellers to take over their markets.
When the cable companies start to meter usage, that will be their death knell. Last act of a desperate industry.
