A friend of mine lives in Ireland. The Catholic church (by this I mean the local priests) was for this by a large margin.

I went to Catholic school in Ireland for three years as a child. It was a horrible experience. The nuns beat the boys unmercifully. The whole experience was incredibly depressing. I oppose gay marriage but I can see why some Irish voters rejected the Catholic ways.
