Sen. Cruz: Trade Promotion Authority Creates a Path for Prosperity

We must engage the global economy to ignite growth and opportunity at home

May 22, 2015 | 202-228-7561

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), today released the following statement regarding legislation to establish trade promotion authority:

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration. While I have serious concerns about the all-too-typical Washington backroom deals that enabled this bill to get to the floor, I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.

"By passing Trade Promotion Authority, we create a path for trade agreements to reduce government-created barriers to prosperity. More economic growth will expand opportunity to those working to climb the economic ladder and achieve the American Dream.

"This bill increases the transparency of trade deals considered under its rules. It requires the public posting of the full text of any such agreement for at least 60 days before Congress begins consideration and reaffirms that Congress gets the final say. It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

"This legislation ensures the United States will not be stuck on the sidelines as China aggressively pushes the 19 trade agreements it currently has under construction. It sends a message to the world that the United States will play an active role in writing the rules that will govern international trade this century. The cost to peace and prosperity of doing otherwise is too great to let this opportunity pass."

I don’t care what party the next President has. Granting more power to the Executive branch and lessening the influence of the Legislative branch is not a good move....

“So, we’re supposed to believe this is some calculated vote to cozy up to the big money donors because the Senate will have the final say on treaties and that’s when he’ll redeem himself?”

That is what you want to think based on nothing. Cruz is not for sale to big money or little money but you won’t believe that since it’s more fun for you to stomp on him as others have done on this thread. There are many candidates so choose whomever you want. My money goes to Cruz.

From the Wall Street Journal's article, Putting Congress in Charge on Trade by Paul Ryan And Ted Cruz:

Under TPA, Congress lays out three basic requirements for the administration. First, it must pursue nearly 150 specific negotiating objectives, like beefing up protections for U.S. intellectual property or eliminating kickbacks for government-owned firms. Second, the administration must consult regularly with Congress and meet high transparency standards.

And third, before anything becomes law, Congress gets the final say. The Constitution vests all legislative power in Congress. So TPA makes it clear that Congress—and only Congress—can change U.S. law. If the administration meets all the requirements, Congress will give the agreement an up-or-down vote. But if the administration fails, Congress can hit the brakes, cancel the vote and stop the agreement.

Trade-promotion authority will hold the administration accountable both to Congress and to the American people. Under TPA, any member of Congress will be able to read the negotiating text. Any member will be able to get a briefing from the U.S. trade representative’s office on the status of the negotiations—at any time. Any member will get to be a part of negotiating rounds. And most important, TPA will require the administration to post the full text of the agreement at least 60 days before completing the deal, so the American people can read it themselves.

I am not against Cruz. I like him. He is the last politician I would expect to vote for a bill buried deep in the basement, shrouded under the color of law.

‘It’s good for the nation...trust me.’

Sorry Ted, after the last 8 years and especially after Election 2014, I trust no one. If it is so good why not has it been made public after the dirty deed?

Says the president that promised for all legislation to be posted for review for 5 days. How has that worked out? Or the “pass it before we will know what’s in it” famous quote? If everything is so good about this trade agreement, then why the secrecy? We are being sold a bill of goods and now Cruz pens a missive with Paul Ryan in the WSJ and all is supposed to be good in conservative land.

Ok, let’s assume its not about money or donors, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Then why the secrecy?

He's explained it actually will increase accountability and visibility.

Then why can't we read it?

What are you troubled by?

The fact that we are NOT allowed to read the damn thing!

I am a one issue person on this one issue. Secret legislation is NOT how this country is supposed to operate. I would not trust my own WIFE to sign an important binding document that I was not allowed to read. This is fundamentally wrong!

Not to mention the fact that B. Hussein O. loves it. It is his baby.

Have you read the language in this new TPA? I have not seen it.

You said about Cruz: “But this is a reminder to drop the shiny-eyed crap about him.”

Welll, I know him and you are no match for Cruz.

Perhaps not. But in my own small way, I know not to give fast-track treaty powers to Obama, so I've got that going for me.

"I am a one issue person on this one issue."

So who is top on your list for President now?

Cruz will remain at the top of my list for President despite my strong opposition on this issue. My wife and I both donated to his campaign on DAY 1. We will not donate to any other candidate.
