Obama wins trade victory in the Senate
The Washington Post ^ | 5/22/2015 | Paul Kane

President Obama won a big victory for his trade agenda Friday with the Senate’s approval of fast-track legislation that could make it easier for him to complete a wide-ranging trade deal that would include 11 Pacific Rim nations.

A coalition of nearly 50 Senate Republicans and more than 10 Democrats voted for Trade Promotion Authority late Friday, sending the legislation to the House for a difficult fight as Obama faces more entrenched opposition from Democrats.

The Senate coalition fought off several attempts by opponents to undermine the legislation, defeating amendments that were politically popular but potentially poisonous to Obama’s bid to secure the trade deal.

“This is an important bill, likely the most important bill we will pass this year. It’s important to President Obama,” Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and primary author of the bill, said at the close of debate.

“FWIW, the libs at HuffingtonPuffington Post are all upset over this, as well. The comments are actually fun to read....one even said “this (trade deal) proves 0 is a stealth Republican”.

Even a blind squirrel will get a nut every now and then.

Again, each time we pass a free trade agreement, our trade deficit with those countries soars.

Sorry Congressman, but I'm not convinced. I dont trust that our “trade partners” will live up yo rheir part of the bargain. More importantly, I don't trust the president. Under this agreement, Obama presumably can't make unilateral changes to our immigration laws? Uh...Congressman...I hate to tell you he already has. And there is nothing to prevent him from doing so again in the future. Who’s going to stop him? You?

When are the AMERICAN PEOPLE GOING TO WIN??

I am damn sick and tired of all the media and pundits gushing about “O[phony]bama wins!” or “Democrats win!” or “Republicans win!” or “Tea Party loses!”

EVERY time you see a headline such as the above, you can bet your ass that the AMERICAN PEOPLE LOST!

In the future we must work to ensure THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WIN!

"The Rats will campaign on the Republican Majority selling out Americans jobs for Chamber of Cronies Cash. They will be correct!"

It also ascertains a Democrat in the White House in 16...and a probably Dem majority in the House.

But the Republicans don't care...any of them.

They'll get paid. They will have done, and will keep doing the bidding of their Chamber Masters.

Remember, there is no GOP absent the Chamber of Commerce. And, that used to be a good and honorable synergy. The GOP would help business by removing the chains of onerous tax and regulation and business would help the GOP with donations, advocacy etc.

The synergy has been changed in the most perverse way. The GOP is SO dependent on business for money that they no longer look to the Constitution for guidance.

Now that business wants open borders and "free trade" (insert here: The Rape of America), the GOP has no choice but give it to them.

There's not an honorable man in the bunch and everything the Democrats say about Republicans being beholden to Wall Street is true.

"Dear Lord, then that means Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton also voted for this treachery! "

Their earlier positions on immigration should have given them away.

"I actually think they are so scared of Cruz and losing their power they will do all they can to maintain the one party status so he can’t get elected."

So they held a gun to Ted's head and forced to vote yes?

The logical gymnastics by Cruz supporters has crossed the threshold of amusing and are now downright bizarre.

"Critics counter that Congress already has the power to reject deals and all Fast Track does is strip lawmakers of the ability to change the deal before passage."

Anyone who doubts Ted Cruz is no different from McConnell or McCain, should read the joint op-ed by him and Ryan.

No mention of the fact that TPA lowers the threshold for approval of an international treaty to 51 votes instead of the 67 votes called out in Article ii, Section ii, Clause 2 of the Constitution....and cedes the power of Congress to POTUS.

Where are those fervent advocates for Cruz who were convinced is was the "only true Conservative" in the race? Convinced he was the ultimate defender of the Constitution? After all, didn't he argue cases before the USSC? Wasn't Obaba a Constitutional Law Professor?

"The legislative package also includes new funding for labor training for workers that are certified for having lost their jobs because of foreign competition."

Unions? The cost to prove this alone will most likely create a new dept......Obama spreading the wealth again....

"I think a majority of Freepers are used to Republicans supporting Free Trade and so this is just not news to them so they don't post. The posters posting on this thread are the old Perotistas that said NAFTA would create a big sucking sound to Mexico, which never happened, but they still like to think free trade is always bad."

The next time you step up to spew your CoC BS, you ought to have your facts straight:

The balance of trade with Mexico went from a $1.6bil surplus for the US in 1993, to a $60+bil deficit for the US in 2014.

In 2007 it was $74bil.

Over the 20 years of NAFTA over $1trillion dollars have been transferred to Mexico...and now they are suing the USA at the WTO to force us to stop labeling our fresh meat with country of origin. They say it's unfair.

Please explain to all of us has this has benefitted the US, it's workers and the preservation of our Capital Stock.

You know what Capital Stock is, right?

"Free trade is A Good Thing. "

In what bizarro world do you think "Free Trade" even exists?

There NO SUCH THING AS FREE TRADE!!!

All the nations of the world, except the USA, are essentially mercantilists and they will put barriers in place against American good, whether via tariff or currency manipulation or myriad other means.

Even were the field completely level, the USA cannot compete with slave labor and cesspool environmentalism in China without bringing those "features" to USA.

Nay! "Free Trade" is a ruse to line up the vulture to feed on America's Capital Stock and create a nation of dependent serfs.

"Yep, I thought about it for just a moment. China is not included in the TPP. "

China can be added after the fact by the WTO without a vote in the US Congress.

"Again, each time we pass a free trade agreement, our trade deficit with those countries soars."

As a fact, the balance of trade with Mexico went from a $1.6bil US surplus in 1993 to a $69+ billion US deficit in 2014.

We have transferred over $1 trillion in US Capital Stock to Mexico in the 20 years of NAFTA.

And Cynwood and his/her Republican operatives will try to convince you this is a good thing.

After all you can get Tomatoes in December and Chevy is building cheaper trucks!

Which is great until America is spent.

No the “sucking sound” was Mexico to here. And you’re so right, us “serfs” paying the taxes is SO much better than tariffs.
