NEW YORK— The national president of the Boy Scouts of America, Robert Gates, said Thursday that the organization’s longstanding ban on participation by openly gay adults is no longer sustainable, and called for change in order to avert potentially destructive legal battles.
In a speech in Atlanta to the Scouts’ national annual meeting, Gates referred to recent moves by Scout councils in New York City and elsewhere to defy the ban.
“The status quo in our movement’s membership standards cannot be sustained,” he said.
Gates said no change in the policy would be made at the national meeting. But he raised the possibility of revising the policy at some point soon so that local Scout organizations could decide on their own whether to allow gays as leaders.

I've known lots of homosexuals and never had a problem with individuals. But now homosexuals activists and their "allies" have destroyed my church (Episcopalian) and my Boy Scouts. I am no longer tolerant.
That and a "hardened heart" spoken of many times in scripture, are the only reasons Gates would be pushing perverts to "lead the Boy Scouts!"
Wouldn’t allow my kid to go out camping for the weekend with a homosexual scout leader...no way, no how.
I agree with him one way...if they’re going to welcome these new gay scout masters, they better get rid of blankets, so that the kids have a chance of at least exposing them.

OCT 1994 – While running for the U.S. Senate in MA, Republican Mitt Romney debated incumbent Sen. Ted Kennedy (D). Romney said that homosexuals “should be allowed” to serve as Boy Scout leaders. At the time he served on the national (volunteer) executive board of directors (NEB) of the BSA. His church, the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints, adopted the BSA program as its official male youth program in 1913. LDS Church doctrine condemned homosexual activity as sinful. His 3 younger sons earned the Eagle Scout rank.
DEC 2000 – The 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Committee, under Mitt Romney’s leadership, banned local Boy Scouts from helping at the Olympics games in FEB 2002. Romney’s spokesman, Caroline Shaw, justified the decision based upon Olympic rules which barred youth under the age of 18. This “rule” evidently was not in effect 4 years earlier at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA, where scouts from the Atlanta Area Council were heavily involved in Olympic activities. Adult scouters could help at the Salt Lake Games but not while wearing their BSA uniforms. Romney declined to speak with all BSA representatives.

I feel that all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation,” according to the New York Daily News.”

Here is Romney in 1994, saying that President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” was unfair to homosexuals in the military.

The LDS program is a hollow program...paying for many Scouts that are on paper only.
Lots of “free” money to the BSA that buys them considerable influence and the mormons gave their blessings to the last National President (a mormon) and thus, effected the membership policy change.
The LDS aren’t concerned with the program as a whole, only as it benefits them...
