On June 2, 1941 a brutal massacre took place in the village of Kondomari, just west of the city of Hania. The Battle of Crete had just completed and the Allied forces surrendered the island to the invading Nazis. Despite the outcome, the battle changed the course of World War II history and was epic on so many levels, including the fierce resistance that the Nazis encountered from the local Cretan population.
The Nazis were dumbfounded by the resistance, never having experienced such ferocious fighting from civilians anywhere else in Europe.
As retribution for so many German losses, General Kurt Student ordered a long series of mass reprisals against the people of Crete. The massacre at Kondomari was the first, starting what would be a brutal campaign of terror, attempting to instill fear in the local population.
The massacre was photographed by a German army war correspondent named Franz-Peter Weixler whose negatives were discovered several decades later in the federal German archives and show a macabre and detailed chronology of what transpired on that fateful day in the tiny Greek village that lost most of its male population. Almost 70 men were assassinated by firing squad that day.

I don’t think the West has forgotten it. Are you asking for reparations?
These people fought valiantly, God Bless Them.
The Nazis did similar to other peoples.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oradour-sur-Glane
“The village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi occupied France was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built after the war on a nearby site, but on the orders of the then French president, Charles de Gaulle, the original has been maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.”
Not only did the West forget, they forgot fast.
In 1947 Nazi General Kurt Student was convicted of war crimes related to Crete, and was sentenced to only 5 years imprisonment. He was released in 1948, so he didn’t even have to serve the 5 years.
Pathetic.
The same reason they forgot what Muslim occupation brings.
Then, in a sense, the war continued with the Cold War.
Let’s say a country like Poland, wronged in the war but now, they were behind the Iron Curtain.
We should not forget, but the West should be more concerned about the Islamists who are carrying out very similar massacres this very day.
I don’t know. What I do know is these Bastards who did it probably lived out their lives back in Germany with no retribution.
Lot of people here think it’s funny that the Leftist prime minister of Greece now demands reparations. Anyone who knows what the Nazi’s did in Greece and later the Communists - who only got in because they were anti-Nazi - cannot forgive and forget.
To go into a village where people had lived peacefully for thousands of years and massacre them is a crime that has no mitigating circumstance. You can’t say “well that’s war”. Germans and Germany were the aggressors and those blond brats had been told the villagers were Untermenschen so it was OK to kill them.
For what they did the Germans could work 1000 years for everyone else in Europe and not have paid back their debt.
THAT is the 1000 year Reich the SOBs should have: the penalty Reich, where they work for all the people they victimized.
Thank-you.
I recall seeing something on History Channel or Military Channel on that French village. de Gaulle was a very conflicted man, resolute in his enmity toward Germany, yet couldn’t grasp how the Russians were just as big a threat so he resisted full NATO involvement.
As to the village in Crete, the German who was the caretaker of the rifle range up the road from my unit was part of the Nazi paratroops that took Crete. He remarked many times about how the populace fought them, many times with just pitchforks. I always enjoyed spending time with him because he always told great stories.
They sure as heck haven’t been allowed to rise again.
As it is said by many, if Germany hadn’t had it stuck to them badly in the treaty to end World War I, perhaps the Nazis would not have risen to power. I’m not saying I agree with that, it would need study but it is said.
You know, for a long time I thought we should just close up the bases. Had spent a lot of time in Germany and mostly thought it was pacified.
But that was in the 1970s, when they were still tip toeing around and being good little Deutschers.
Now I go back and....it’s starting to be the Alt Deutschland again. The cops are pricks who enjoy screwing with Americans, the people are sullen and reserved again, clearly fuming at all the Foreigners...except the Muslims who they seem to get along with just fine.
And I have come to a conclusion...the bases don’t leave anytime soon. The virus is still there, lurking in people’s hearts.
“Why has the West forgotten what the Germans did?”
Who could possibly forget when we’re reminded of it every day on TV, in films, online, in print, etc.?
The entire Czech village of Lidice was given a similar treatment by the Nazi bastards after the 1942 assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in Prague. After shooting all the men and shipping most of the women to camps, they dynamited, burned and bulldozed the town to the ground.

Check this out everyone, this is a color video of Berlin months after the war ended. I usually don’t put youtube videos up but it really is curious.
Check out towards the last 2 minutes of bombed out Berlin, amazing destruction.
Also, check out around 1:37 into the video, the woman sticks her tongue out and also does that signal, hand on the end of the nose, whatever that is called.
There is no Third Reich anymore. Yes, Germany committed many horrible during WWII but they paid a heavy price for it. Their country was in ruins, their cities pulverized to rubble, many Germans were punished for war crimes, and the country was divided and occupied for decades following the end of WWII.
The Greeks have ONLY themselves to blame for the bankrupt condition they now find themselves in. Just as the Germans were wrong using Jews as scapegoats following the end of WWI, it is wrong for the Greeks to use the Germans as scapegoats for their current economic irresponsibility and profligate spending.
“they paid a heavy price for it.”
No where near heavy enough, not if they grovel for 1000 years!
This might make your day:

And why are we almost NEVER reminded of what the Japanese did?
Nanking
Bataan
Unit 731
Comfort women
Cannibalism
etc.....
It is simply human nature.
I saw a program on “The History Channel” about WWI. One of the battles was at some place I had never heard of. After the battle, a small memorial was placed there which read something like this: “America Will Never Forget What You Did Here”, speaking of the bravery of the American soldiers.
I thought to myself, America has already forgotten.
