A US appeals court has ruled that the NSA's dragnet of millions of Americans' phone calls is illegal, and Edward Snowden served as the catalyst for the decision.
"Americans first learned about the telephone metadata program that appellants now challenge on June 5, 2013, when the British newspaper The Guardian published a FISC order leaked by former government contractor Edward Snowden," the court noted.

Well I’m glad that the MSM suddenly became a reliable source of information and God knows that the people he exposed would NEVER EVER pad what he took with claims of things that would make him look bad.
Of course none of us actually KNOW what he took other than what he told us, do we? No. We ‘know’ what the very people spying on us ‘SAY’ he took.
And maybe he did. Time will tell. But a person has to be a pretty gullible at best, if they actually believe the official story. So you go right ahead and act as governmental assassin for the people lying to you about everything from global warming to illegal immigrant rape statistics to school lunches. I’ll pass.
It would be. If it’s true. Obama says it’s true. The people working for Barack Obama say it’s true. Republicans who got exposed by Snowden say it’s true.
Seems pretty black and white to me.
I believe they have to have a mandate and strict guidelines.
When they breach those mandates and guidelines, prison needs to be the corrective measure.
I hesitate to word it that they need to operate under the President as far as guidelines or oversight, because then it could be subject to stooping to Obama’s guidelines and oversight.
...not a good thing at all.
We agree that they need to be reigned in, particularly domestically.
We know what he took because NSA said he took everything - period. That is not something NSA would say unless it was true and everyone ie - the Russian and Chinese knew it. If those parties knew nothing, NSA would have said nothing. Snowden effectively neutered NSA, as well as most other DOD intelligence agencies.
Time has already told - we have lost the ability to track AQ and ISIS electronically. We can no longer be sure that our encryption techniques work, worse we cannot be sure that intercepts are real and not fakes.
That anyone would take the tack that some espouse here shows how little they know about how ELINT is collected and disseminated.
Arguments about Global Warming etc are spurious and misleading attempts to minimize a very serious loss on par with the damage B Clinton did and that which O is going to do with his upcoming Nuclear Treaty with China (the one with Iran is comparatively harmless).
And your panties are in a twisted wad because someone other than the phone company has a record of what numbers you called?
Your argument boils down to “Believe everything the people spying on us tell us.” If you are good with that, then there’s not much more I can say.
Your assessment of the number of employees is fairly close, with thousands of HQS military assignees both at HQS and deployed globally. Sometimes success depends on being at the right place at the right time. I wish I could go into more detail but I can’t. I’m sure you’ll understand, DO.
Ax, I don’t need to know more detail. I used those numbers to express a thought.
I support our clandestine operations and don’t want any information.
I do want these agencies to operate within the law and avoid having to use excuses when things go south.
I appreciate your response.
What he did has done nothing to impede the NSA in fact they have developed even more intrusive technology. If people think the NSA or any government will turn off this technology they are deluded.
That wasn't his choice. It was Obama's.
Snowden was on his way from Hong Kong to Ecuador, via Moscow and Havana. But, on the leg from Hong Kong to Moscow, Obama's State Department yanked his passport, thus stranding him in Moscow.
Interestingly, his booked flight from Moscow to Havana would have passed over the United States, possibly involving the scrambling of US forces to divert it. But Zero saved himself from whatever heat that decision one way or the other might have generated by making the State Department get on the case quickly.
Right, but have you noticed that since this happened that even liberals are abandoning their beloved DNC? This pissed people off. And they see that yes, the NSA etc is only ramping up.
Everyone and everything has a breaking point. They will hit it. It won’t happen tomorrow or next week. But it will happen. Trust in govt has never been lower. EVER.
Whether people hit the breakpoint in time so salvage anything, is another question.
Had Snowden not exposed this, people would still be in the dark. It is never a bad thing to expose evil. We can armchair his actions and motivations all day long. But he exposed evil.
“Im tired of our elected officials and appointees getting a free ride when they screw up. Prosecute them and treat them like any other criminal.
We know there were Constitutional infractions here. They took a oath. Prosecute.”
Nobody in the Congress wants to prosecute anybody for anything. Ever! Recent history proves this. We can’t even get congress to prosecute the IRS. Our POTUS supports Islamic terrorism. BOTH parties funded Obamacare, and amnesty. Criminal behavior in almost all of our fedgov goes unchallenged.
Obama, the NSA and Congress want Snowden bad. This tells me a lot
Freeper Left aka “Republicans”? Lol
I’m never going to be 100% right on everything, but I am still very troubled by the release of information regarding our agents on station.
That’s not a favor to our nation. So for me it’s a mixed bag. I’m glad to have the NSA nailed for capturing our communications, but I am angry our people were compromised.
” Im never going to be 100% right on everything,”
For years, I thought I was always right, but I was mistaken : )
” I am still very troubled by the release of information regarding our agents on station.”
So am I, but I am FAR more troubled by a gangster federal government, run by a SUPREME gangster.
Well that’s easy to say if your neck isn’t on the line.
I realize you care about that too. I don’t see why he had to do that. It didn’t reveal anything we needed to know, and it did several very bad things.
It risked the lives of our agents.
It risked their operations being destroyed.
It risked hurting our nation seriously in some instances.
It risked his own efforts being trashed as they are because of it.
I don’t want his efforts related to domestic spying tainted.
That is defeatist.
As for myself, I see it like this. If we have a government allowed to freely spy and gather once legally protected info from the citizenry, are aren’t in America. We are in Russia/the Soviet Union/Romania.
If we cannot guard against terrorism without going surveillance society then the terrorists really have won.
” As for myself, I see it like this. If we have a government allowed to freely spy and gather once legally protected info from the citizenry, are arent in America. We are in Russia/the Soviet Union/Romania.”
Good point. Both of you are correct, for different reasons, and intent. Back in 1 1/2 hours, and will have some commentary on this.
That’s why I don’t sign on to what the NSA did.
In fact I’m angry enough about it, that I honestly want to see people go to prison for it.
I support his efforts to reveal this.
When you give the NSA the ability to say you also revealed names of agents on location, you give the public cause to think you’re a nut-job.
That will make it easier for many of them to dismiss him.
We get it. Some of the public won’t. I want that segment very small. It should be non-existent, or limited to the Leftist who never see anything clearly.
“Thats why I dont sign on to what the NSA did.
In fact Im angry enough about it, that I honestly want to see people go to prison for it.”
Nobody is going to go to prison if they work for the (Obama Fed-gov). Nobody. Since Obama took office, he has removed all the top spots in FedGov, and replaced them with hard core leftists. Pick your agency....
IRS
Dept of Energy
Dept. of Education
EPA
NSA
Homeland Security
Atty-Gen. racist, Marxist thug, replaced by another even worse.
ALL of them are our enemy.
All are thugs.
And since they are all hand picked, and all thugs, they will not prosecute themselves. Simple logic
