Amtrak Train May Have Been Struck Before It Derailed, Officials Say

PHILADELPHIA An assistant conductor on the Amtrak train that derailed on Tuesday believes she heard the engineer tell another regional train operator in a radio transmission that the train had been struck by something just before the accident, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
At a news conference on Friday, Robert L. Sumwalt, the safety board official who is leading the investigation, said the F.B.I. had been asked to examine what he described as a fist-size impact area found on the lower left side of the trains windshield. Officials said that the F.B.I. had been called in because it has the forensics expertise needed for the investigation, but that it had not yet begun its analysis.

SEPTA officials have confirmed that an "unknown projectile" broke the engineer's window on a SEPTA Regional Rail train on Tuesday night along the same corridor as the deadly Amtrak crash. And
according to a passenger on the 8 p.m. Acela train from New York to Philadelphia, that train was struck as well.
According to SEPTA, train number 769 was on its way to Trenton from Philadelphia when an object hit the engineer's window, breaking it. After the incident was reported, the train was held at the North Philadelphia station.

Good to know. Whether something hit the train or not does not explain why the train sped up to above 100 mph in a 50 mph zone.

That is odd. Two trains are reportedly hit by projectiles within 5 min, and then the third train now ‘appears’ to have been hit as well, 20 min later.

The location of these possible projectile incidents is in the heart of darkness in North Philadelphia. In my youth the neighborhood was central and eastern European, but it changed. Its inhabitants occasionally refer to it as “the jungle.”

Correct. And the article in this thread is based on the claim of an amtrack employee who is a coworker of the engineer. Let’s not forget that union brothers and sisters may bend over backwards to protect each other, especially when pressured from higher up. This employee’s claims need to be independently verified.

We knew about the SEPTA train hit "by a projectile". And I don't recall reading that SEPTA engineer said anything about talking to Brandon Bostian. But this story is about the derailed AMTRACK train hit "by a projectile", and thus investigated by FBI.
(excerpt) "The windshield of the Amtrak train was shattered in the accident but one area of glass had a breakage pattern that could be consistent with being hit by an object, he said, and the FBI is investigating."
