Amtrak Train May Have Been Struck Before It Derailed, Officials Say

PHILADELPHIA — An assistant conductor on the Amtrak train that derailed on Tuesday believes she heard the engineer tell another regional train operator in a radio transmission that the train had been struck by something just before the accident, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

At a news conference on Friday, Robert L. Sumwalt, the safety board official who is leading the investigation, said the F.B.I. had been asked to examine what he described as a fist-size impact area found on the lower left side of the train’s windshield. Officials said that the F.B.I. had been called in because it has the forensics expertise needed for the investigation, but that it had not yet begun its analysis.

I am no physicist, but getting hit by a projectile would tend to slow an abject down, no? Not speed it up by 100%+.

There is no word yea or nay whether his reported concussion has a medical report consistent with his head having been struck by a small flying object.

Let’s not get SO focused on his warped love life that we forget terrorists’ hate life. It matters to do this investigation right and a bunch of irresponsible talk is going to distract just the same as it did in Zimmerman’s case. FR does get listened to.

depending n the size of the projectile I would imagine

thus far I dont believe that theres been any mention of the possible size of this so called projectile

a bullet or a Brick would certainly not slow down a train traveling at that speed..a boulder sized rock might depending on the point of impact

simply saying a projectile...may have hit the train isnt really saying much of anything

A few days ago when this all started hitting the news, I thought they had reported a DIFFERENT train getting hit by a projectile, close to this wreck.

I’d sure want to rule out “SNIPER”.

Train physics from a few years ago when a freight train got caught in a tornado. Being a freight train, I’m guessing it was going considerably slower than 100 mph.

the INITIAL STORY did not mention the amtrak train being HIT...but that the SEPTA train had been moments before the AMTRAK crash.

the FIRST mention of the word projectile.....did not mention the AMTRAK train being hit by said object

it said...that the SEPTA train had been hit moments before the AMTRAK crash

RUMOR has it that the camera’s had been installed six months ago...but there was a complicated wating period..as per the FCC.REGULATIONS...before they could be “activated”....

BS. These are new engines and this one is about a year old and came with an "event recorder" that included an outward facing camera. Comments I've read on Trainorders are unclear as to whether it has an inward facing camera.
