At least five people died and dozens were injured Tuesday evening when several cars of an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia.
Train 188, carrying 238 passengers and five crew members, was traveling from Washington, D.C., to New York.
Seven cars and the engine of the train derailed in the 2000 block of Wheatsheaf Lane.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter confirmed at least five people died in the accident.
"It is an absolute disastrous mess," he said. "Never seen anything like this in my life."
Six people in critical condition and more than 40 people with less critical injuries were transported to local hospitals, a Philadelphia Fire Department spokesman told reporters. Others were "walking wounded," he said.

Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Pa., tweeted that he was on the train at the time of the crash.
"I'm on @Amtrak train that just crashed. Im ok. Helping others. Pray for those injured," he wrote.
The National Transportation Safety Board was en route to the scene to investigate the cause of the crash.
"We do not know what happened here, we do not know why this happened," Nutter said. "We are not going to speculate about it."
Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority service in the region was suspended pending further notice.
Prayers.

Something’s up...
Jihad?
RIP.
A guest on CNN (international division, apparently) seemed to blame the infrastructure and how the U.S. doesn’t maintain it properly. And there ya have it.
Thanks for posting this update. Very sad story. I love trains and I’ve taken that trip many times. May those who died rest in peace and many those who are injured recover.
It was probably just excessive speed coming around a curve, but time will tell.
If you ever get to Boone, Iowa, be sure and ride the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.
A witness who was driving near the train said he saw a flash than a boom sound. Another witness only heard a boom sound.
God I hope no one place something in the tracks to derail that train on purpose. We all will have to wait. However, if it comes to be a terrorist attack, you think the media will report it as such?
hard to say.

The Latest on Amtrak crash: All 7 cars came off the tracks

He was paraphrasing what Dan Rather said on the morning of 9/11/01.
Sure. The only question is, what kind? Is it actual terrorist nationals or just terrorist-loving Americans? Is it overt jihad or the "soft jihad" of neglect, ie poor equipment maintenance and careless employees?
If I do, I will!
First thought....texting and not slowing down in the curve. So many texting accidents.
"I'm on @Amtrak train that just crashed. Im ok. Helping others. Pray for those injured," he wrote.
Okay, is it just me?... This is like taking a selfie. If, heaven forbid, I find myself in that situation and as soon as I feel everything stop?...
1.) I'm checking to see if I'm alive. Check. Good.
2.) I can move my limbs? Check. Good.
3.) See if anybody in my immediate vicinity needs assistance. Check. Okay, clear. Good
4.) Make sure I am out of danger. Check. Good.
5.) Look for more fellow passengers in need of help at least until I am escorted out by emergency personnel. Check. Good.
6.) Locate my phone and call an immediate loved one and ask that they contact others who may have concerns with my well-being...
Seems reasonable, right? But... "Im ok. Helping others."? Immediately jumping on Twitter?
"No ma'am, your leg shouldn't normally bend like that but let me post a message to my followers and I'll be right with you, hold still and quit your belly-aching. Hey, should "Amtrak" be in all caps?..."
Now, I feel as though I am looking skyward through grandmaw's eyes when I find myself repeating her oft-expressed, loving plea...
"Heaven help us..."
It’s not just you ....I had the same thoughts when reading the article. Murphy is so vain he thinks the whole world needs to know he’s “ok” ...oh, and he’s “helping others” too! What a joke.
You should definitely “hashtag” #Amtrak when you post.
