OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. Thirteen candidates are looking to fill the state congressional spot once held by Alan Nunnelee who passed away last year from brain cancer.
The Circuit Clerk for DeSoto County said a runoff election was bound to happen, which would cost taxpayers about $52,000.
The Mississippi Secretary of State said on Tuesday voter turnout has been low in all 21 counties that make up District 1.

I have reservations about Kelly but will vote for him. I’ve had a democrat congressman before, with any Republican there’s always some hope they’ll see the light or at least bow to constituent pressure. I expect him to be much like the late Congressman Nunnelee who supported Boehner. Kelly answered several questions with he could be trusted to vote his conscience, I’ve been hearing that from politicians for over fifty years, they say they’re listening to constituents but the lobbyist, house leadership and political bosses (Haley Barbour) are the last ones to have their ear. Support for Boehner and not voting for CRs without appreciable spending cuts were two of his “I can be trusted to vote my conscience”. The Nunnelee family supported him.
wow! How odd it is to hear of a politician who died from something other than a plane crash or a self inflicted gun shot wound....
It seems the holder of this seat always congress out of Tupelo. I will vote for Kelly, but will be watching him and who knows he might be primaried next year. Ross could have done better, but the tea party got in late. Glad Tagert the carpet bagger is out though. Many people lost serious money on this with ads, Jones, Tagert, Collins, Pirkle. I never saw a Kelly commercial though
Henry really didn’t have any money, he did get 11% here in DeSoto county, the most populous in the district, to run 3rd of 13 and he did carry Webster, his home county. Trent Kelly only received 2 or 3% in DeSoto. Tagert, Boyd, Jones, Pirkle and Whitwell ran a lot of TV adds here. Henry ran ahead of Boyd, Whitwell and Pirkle here in Desoto County and led Boyd and Whitwell in the district. Henry was 7th of 13 with 5+%. None of the big spenders fared well, Tagert was third with 13 or 14%, he will still be on the ballot for Northern Mississippi Transportation Commissioner. Tagert was the US Chamber and the Haley Barbour candidate, he said he was Conservative and against amnesty but that can’t be true when you belong to Haley Barbour and the US Chamber. I voted for Tagert for the Transportation post four years ago but I’ll not vote for him this time.
I agree special elections should be the same format as other elections with a Republican primary and a democrat primary, both with runoff provisions, also these should be CLOSED primaries. The jungle primary and open primaries both seem to favor the gop-e or possibly it appears that way because they can be manipulated by the ethically challenged.
Lee was the most populous county in the district, I believe it’s now DeSoto. Most of the district is smaller more rural counties. years ago I heard an expression that the voters didn’t want a Congressman from “North of the Coldwater”, meaning DeSoto county, they view it as suburban Memphis and they don’t want a Memphis Congressman. I believe that still exists. Quinten Whitwell ran as DeSoto Countian, at least here in DeSoto county, he left here when he was 14 and moved to Oxford and then to Jackson and was on the City council and then back to Oxford, I don’t believe he had been back long enough for residency. He spent a lot of money on local TV and mailers but I believe he only got 4% in the district and no more than 5 in Desoto county.
Agreed.
Blame Bryant on that one
A big part of the blame should fall on the Mississippi GOP-E, they oppose closed primaries. Closed primaries would make it more difficult for rinos.
Yes, Conservative/RINO was the worst case for the runoff (since only one rat ran making rat/rat impossible) since the rats would have elected the RINO.
CA Rep. Tom McClintock was fortunate to defeat his RINO foe Art Moore in the general election (and by a handsome 20 point margin, he was obviously successful in painting Moore as the defacto rat). In WA state tea party candidate Clint Didier lost to more establishment Republican Dan Newhouse for an open seat. Hate those jungle primaries.
I didn’t know MS had multi-county judicial districts from whence DAs were elected. Looks like Politics1 dropped the ball with it’s description of Kelly’s position.
There are 22 of them, Kelly’s district (1) includes 7 counties, Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, and Tishomingo. (MS seems to love Indian names for counties)

Seems counties have their own lesser “County Attorney”.
What, is he related to Mike Gillich? "Fofo's" name is spelled differently, with only one "L." Regardless, Democrat, Dixie Mafia, same thing, only different.
Choctaws, Chickasaws and Creeks from Mississippi and Alabama, three of the five Indian Nations of Oklahoma delivered there by General Andrew Jackson. There are many Oklahoma towns, cities and counties that have namesakes in Mississippi and Alabama.
