During a panel discussion about poverty, President Obama criticized Fox News for stereotyping poor people as sponges or leeches. Part of the problem, he explained, was that so many people think that the poor are underserving of help from the federal government, causing wealthy people to actually be angry at the poor. I think the effort to suggest that the poor are sponges and leeches are dont want to work, are lazy or are undeserving got traction, Obama said. He blamed the Fox News channel for feeding that narrative. Its still being propagated, I mean, I have to say that if

“The main cause of poverty is children.”
The main cause of children is sex. Then children cause poverty, which leads to more sex, since you can’t afford any other entertainment. It’s a vicious circle :)
Then it's just a matter of time before her car is seized during a traffic stop as a drug money related vehicle.
I mean, if I had $12,000 in cash with me, on the way to buy a car at a swap meet, it may be confiscated.
Must be a drug dealer.
Her cash is in her car.
You make bad choices, you get bad results.
“Why am I bothering to work and take care of my family instead of getting on the government welfare rolls getting my free food, free obamaphone and free caddy??”
Either you’ve got principles, or you’re a sucker. It just depends on how you look at it.
I’d probably look at it the first way, otherwise it will drive ya nuts.
Why Wont Liberals Talk about the Most Important Kind of Privilege in America?
Dude.
That is NOT rap.
What would you call it then, hip hop?
Not even close.
It could be called a mashup, I suppose. Probably the best way to describe it.
Who cares? It’s all crap anyway. Most folks here I’m sure would consider it rap, or something close to it.
I have a pay as you go cell phone plan as well. What REALLY gets me chapped off is that every time I buy a phone card, they ding me for an extra dollar or so in taxes (plus sales tax) to pay for the latest i-phone for one of these jag-offs.
Can someone tell me what in the h3ll someone who doesn't even work needs the latest i-phone for?
I do, it's unconstitutional.
Actually, that is exactly the problem. The Federal Government has NO BUSINESS handing out money to ANYONE. Charity belongs in the community, the church and at home. The Federal Government needs to stay out of it.
It's one of those Internet memes that you find all over the Internet, but I don't see it in any FNS stories (unless Glen Beck made reference to it when he was there or some talking head mentioned it on their own).
Also, the president doesn't touch on whether there's truth in the stories and how much. There definitely is a government program (which goes back at least to the Bill Clinton years), and private companies (some quite shady) have been offering Obamaphones to those on public assistance, but Obama reduces the whole question to a jab at Fox News, with the assumption that there's no truth in it.
There are several classes of "poor". There are some who cannot do for themselves, unable to even try. There are others who cannot do for themselves despite legitimate efforts. Those deserve(?*) our help, though I would prefer it to be voluntary charity rather than robbery at gunpoint by government.
But there are many who refuse to try to help themselves though they may be capable, and those who have learned to game the system and live off of our largesse. They are the sponges or leeches. They deserve NOTHING but prisons or work camps.
*I don't like the word deserve, but couldn't think of an acceptable substitute. I guess everyone "deserves" to be treated with kindness unless they harm others.
