CHICAGO (AP) President Barack Obama has decided to build his presidential library on the South Side of Chicago, where his political career began.
The Barack Obama Foundation announced in a news release early Tuesday that the library will be erected on park land that was proposed for the site by the University of Chicago. The site was selected over bids made by Columbia University in New York, the University of Hawaii and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
"With a library and a foundation on the South Side of Chicago, not only will we be able to encourage and affect change locally, but what we can also do is to attract the world to Chicago." Obama said in a video accompanying the release. "All the strands of my life came together and I really became a man when I moved to Chicago. That's where I was able to apply that early idealism to try to work in communities in public service. That's where I met my wife. That's where my children were born."
The decision was hardly a surprise. The University of Chicago's bid was long considered a front-runner, and people with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press and other media nearly two weeks ago that it was the winner.
Both the president and first lady once worked at the university, and they still maintain a house near campus. Obama taught constitutional law and worked as a community organizer on the South Side. First lady Michelle Obama is a Chicago native and worked as an administrator at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
"Every value, every memory, every important relationship to me exists in Chicago. I consider myself a South Sider," Michelle Obama said.

so happy they chose the Chicago slums instead of my beautiful Hawaii. Warning, expect to get mugged when you stop by the LIEBARRY for a visit.
Shouldn't that be "being able to"?
"Eight years is only the beginning. Barack Obama's commitment to public service preceded his presidency, and will continue long after he and the first lady leave the White House. The foundation will carry forward the Obamas' efforts to inspire active citizenship, expand economic opportunity, and promote peace and justice throughout the world," said the email.
The work has just begun.
The President's historic candidacy was never just about winning an office; it was about building a movement to tackle challenges that would define a generation. That work will live on in the Obama Foundation, which will inspire people of all backgrounds and beliefs to better their communities, their countries, and their world.
Our Leadership The Barack Obama Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of directors and chaired by civic leader Martin Nesbitt.

The Pritzker connection to development of the Obama Presidential Library just got even stronger.
Led by two close associates of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, the foundation set up to plan and raise money for the library named an acting executive director, Robbin Cohen, a former top executive with Ms. Pritzker’s real estate interests.
Until recently, Ms. Cohen was a longtime executive and served as president of Pritzker Realty Group, a unit of PSP Capital Partners LLC, the Chicago investment firm founded and run by Ms. Pritzker until she went to the Commerce Department last year. In recent years, the foundation’s new appointee founded and ran Cohen Investment Group, an apartment building developer in Chicago.
The Barack Obama Foundation’s three-person board includes J. Kevin Poorman, president and CEO of PSP Capital Partners, and Martin Nesbitt, one of the president’s closest friends, who was a vice president of Pritzker Realty Group and former CEO of Parking Spot, an airport parking firm he started with financial backing from Ms. Pritzker.
Chicago is vying to be the home of the presidential library, which will probably cost upward of $500 million to build. New York and Honolulu also are expected to be contenders when cities respond in June to the foundation’s request for qualifications.
Ms. Pritzker chaired national fundraising for President Barack Obama’s first campaign for the White House, and Mr. Nesbitt served as treasurer of both campaigns.
Former White House Social Secretary Julianna Smoot, a longtime political fundraiser for both Obama campaigns, Sen. Dick Durbin and other Democratic senators, is the foundation’s third founding board member.

Wonder what happened to Smoot? Subtracted Smoot and added Maya & Plouffe...
Gotta hab lotsa pitchers of his man, Reggie...
Well the South side of Chicago
Is the baddest part of town
And if you go down there
You better just beware
Of a man who puts the US down
Now Obama’s more than trouble
he’s building a library there
He’ll be right at home mongst the driveby shooters
and the men who should be in stir.
[Chorus]
And it’s bad, bad to object and frown
Bout the baddest man in the whole damned town
Though he’s badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog
Now Barack he’s a grifter
His wife likes fancy clothes
She likes to wave her diamond priced trips
In front of everybody’s nose
He’s gonna build himself a library
For the opening she’ll need a dress
Gotta look as good as a mongrel should
Though the tax payers be depressed
[Chorus]
Now from that dark day 6 years ago
Since Barack became president
The Obamas have lived it up real good
Not paid a dime but been on the take
Now this POTUS library in Chicago
Will be surrounded by the group
Of homies that best represent
the couple that currently reside free rent
in the home of the president
[Chorus]
Well the two chislers will be right at home
The ghetto’s just their place
What better spot to have a monument
to the guy who’s brought America disgrace
*LOL* Very good!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice one Tennessee Nana.
I suspect even the wall coverings of golf score cards will be adobe photo shopped. He should also have rows of useless 747 engines he has burned up. I can hardly wait for him to be there i.e., gone.
His will be the first library with an indoor full-size basketball court for exhibition games, an indoor putting green, a vegetable garden, a solar-panel roof, a windmill out front, and an algae pool out back. But no papers...
I might as well throw in an executive travel agency, a haute couture designer clothes showroom, a haute cuisine restaurant, and a state-of-the-art concert theater, while we're at it.

That library is full of obama.

That is where it truly deserves to be. I was very impressed with the South Side. NOT! Visiting scholars will stand a good change of being mugged or shot in the library parking lot.
An electronic one would be better than one of those tornado signs since the numbers would be going up quickly and often.
