One thing about the Depression. There was so much beef, pork, milk available that you could eat steak three times a day.
Just not enough people had money to buy it.

So, what did the Government do? They bought up whole herds of beef, pork and dairy. Slaughtered the animals and buried them, then dumped the milk, to get the prices up for people who still had no money to buy them at the higher rate.

Ten years later, the same government officials were now begging the ranchers to increase production of beef and pork to support the war effort. You still can’t make a cow have more than one calf a year!

Your Great grandmother Lizzy was typical of the tough breed of South Dakotans who endured the Great Depression and reminds me of my grandparents and parents who also endured hard times in the 1930s.
