DALLAS – Jim Wright, a veteran Texas congressman who was the first House speaker in history to driven out of office in midterm, has died. He was 92.

The Harveson and Cole funeral home says Wright died early Wednesday morning. He'd been living at a nursing home in Fort Worth.

Wright represented the Fort Worth area for 34 years, beginning with his election in 1954. He was the Democratic majority leader in the House for a decade, rising to the speakership in January 1987, to replace Tip O'Neill.

But after about two years as House speaker, Wright was charged with 69 violations of House rules on reporting of gifts, accepting gifts from people with an interest in legislation, and limits on outside income. He left office in June 1989

This poster notes, without remorse, the demise of yet another corrupt office-holder.

“One should only speak good of the dead”.

True. I even said a nice thing about Teddy Kennedy. Can’t remember it for the life of me though.

Never really cared much about him. I guess the Christie Brinkley thing intrigued me. Some of the songs were okay, but I don’t think much about him anymore. Probably a libtard for all I know.

Now if Jim Wright had been a senator from some blue state lieberal hellhole he could have stayed on and exited today as a glorious stiff. Too bad he missed out on all the senate country club perks in his latter years,

Yeah, the best they could do is the Bush Tollway, might as well be a Democrat.

That's why I refer to all freeways in North Texas by their numeric designation only. The one exception is I-30 which I'm glad to call the Tom Landry Highway since he was a good Christian and Conservative. I wrote a letter years ago to the Ticket asking that they quit calling I-635 LBJ. But that station has been on a leftward tilt of late with George Dunham recently confessing that he's become more liberal as he ages. Disgusting.

He's been hanging around Gordo too much.

Speaking of Gordo, I think this classic picture may have been his work. If so, it may be the last good thing he's done. You and I have seen it, but a number of other FReepers may have missed it and it still brings a chuckle:

Dallas 'RAT (Interim) Mayor Dwaine Carraway presents a key to the city to Lee Harvey Oswald.

The backstory on this is that commie Carraway really did present a key to the city to convicted criminal Michael Vick, dog murderer. More proof of my assertion that Dallas County is a third world socialist cesspool -- but the far-flung exurbs are okay.

I pretty much ignore the “honorary” names of freeways and use the generic terms, and if someone tries to reference one of these names, I correct them and ask for the REAL highway name.

In my neck of the woods, it’s “820 West,” not “Jim Wright Freeway.”

Don’t forget all the Cong. Mickey Leland buildings, bridges, expressways, etc.

I remember driving across Ohio listening to him deliver that long, rambling, defensive, pompous, self-serving resignation speech on the House floor.

Actually, my etc., etc. referred to a famous quote of Bette Davis. Upon hearing of the death of Joan Crawford (she of “Mommy Dearest” - they mutually loathed each other) Bette said “One should only speak good of the dead. Joan Crawford is dead. Good.”
