You don’t understand. Repentance of sin means God has forgiven the person. It has absolutely nothing to do with legal punishment; the debt to society still must be paid.

Otherwise we’d have every criminal running around saying, “I’m sorry, I repent” and getting loosed onto society.

I agree, convicted criminals should be required to undergo punishment stipulated by law. But I was amazed how Christian beliefs let you off so easily for past sins. There are many sins for which one does not always get caught and convicted in a court of law. Such as adultery, stealing, even most murders go unsolved when committed by strangers.Then you get to repent and all past sins are forgiven! And you can ascend to heaven!! That is not how it works in Hinduism. We must pay for our sins by doing many more good deeds. Otherwise come back to eart in next life as a democrat :)
