Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, announced he would run for president of the United States on Tuesday and he already has the support of Chuck Norris.

"I still believe Mike Huckabee is the most qualified,” Norris told the New York Times. “He has the moral clarity and experience to lead our great country forward.”

from the Arkansas Leader in 2004:

Several prosecutors around the state are upset with Gov. Huckabee for grant- ing clemency to violent criminals, but he is blaming the prosecutors for often not seeking the maximum penalty and keeping felons locked up longer.

Until now, Huckabee has refused to comment on his controversial policy of making violent prisoners eligible for parole– they include murderers, armed robbers and rapists, who often return to a life of crime after they’re freed – but in a statement to The Leader this week, he lashed out at prosecutors for not doing more to keep prisoners behind bars – to which Pulaski County Prosecuting Attor-ney

Larry Jegley had this response: “That’s a load of baloney.”

“I’m offended as a prosecutor and as a citizen. He can blame the prosecutors, but ultimately he’s the man responsible,” Jegley says. “He’s the only one who can sign on the dotted line.

…_ In addition, Jegley, Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Herzfeld and others have accused Huckabee of violating the state Constitution when he commutes sentences without explanation. The Constitution requires the governor to give reasons why he grants clemency to criminals.

“He doesn’t do it,” insists Herzfeld, who recently had a clemency overturned because Huckabee did not explain why he commuted a murderer’s life sentence.

Jegley cites numerous examples of Huckabee’s freeing felons who go on committing more crimes and wind up back in prison.

Maurice Clemmons received a 35-year sentence in the early 1990s for armed robbery and theft. His sentence was commuted in May 2000, and he was let out three months later.

The following March, Clemmons committed two armed robberies and other crimes and was sentenced to 10 years. You’d think they’d keep him locked up after that, but no: He was paroled last March and is now wanted for aggravated robbery.

If Huckabee decides to set these criminals free, Jegley says, at least “he ought to give an accounting. I can’t imagine why in the world they’d want them released from jail. There’s a good reason we’re afraid of them. The sad truth is that a significant number of people re-offend.”

The victims’ families, Jegley says, “deserve an explanation. I look into people’s eyes who’ve suffered the unspeakable. I believe they deserve justice.

Most or all politicians struggle with their past. Huckabee has a past that reveals him to be a big spender. It is the ball and chain around his ankle when he tries to present himself as a conservative. Socially? Perhaps. Fiscally? Not even close.

Yes, LOL, that’s true.

I can’t imagine Huckabee has much of a chance, either, but I do appreciate his stances on life and family. Same with Santorum and Jindal. Santorum’s remark about Bruce Jenner might have been an exasperation remark, like “If he says he’s a turtle, then he’s a turtle,” sort of thing. I did read the rest of Santorum’s quote which was peculiar. Might have to scratch him off our list and put in Cruz. :)

Something my husband told me some months ago, though, was that he felt if Jindal (or someone just like him) didn’t get in, then it would be the beginning of the true End Times. Not that we aren’t there already, but more intense.....

Oh, I agree with you completely about the end times. Every time I find myself ready to tear my hair out, I try to tell myself it’s all part of God’s plan.

I do think you should read up on Ted Cruz. You might be pleased with what you see.

Now it really does shock me to find out that people exist who still don’t realize how dependent that peanut-headed moron is on his teleprompter.

My husband and I were talking earlier today...it’s frustrating to know that we have such an excellent candidate, and so much indecision.

The left never has a problem coalescing around one of their own.

This was not a matter of “forgiveness”. This was a governor using his power to release violent criminals who then went on to rape and murder more innocent victims. Huckabee can forgive whomever he chooses, but when he abuses power and puts the public at risk and costs lives, it has to be included in any assessment of him for political office. Extremely poor judgement.

But HT, if we get an amnesty-pusher in, the country is gone.

Isn't a primary election designed to weed out such individuals?

To forgive is a basic feature of Christianity.

The role of government is not to forgive.

The role of government is to secure our God-Given rights and to secure our safety.

” I don’t want someone using his Christianity to try and ram amnesty down my throat.”

John 10: 1

“I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!

It is. But when I think of the debates, I see a circus, with each candidate getting a couple of questions each, and voters coming away more undecided than ever.
