Why Do So Many People Hate the Sound of Hillary Clinton's Voice?
New Republic ^ | May 1, 2015 | Elspeth Reeve

ou know Hillary Clinton’s voice, right? I mean, you know it. It’s just so loud and annoying. Or maybe it's like a nagging wife. Or inauthentic—that phony Southern accent! Those flat Midwestern vowels! Whatever it is, her voice is burned into your brain.

Now think of Jeb Bush’s voice. It’s so—wait, what does it sound like again? He sounds just ... like a guy, maybe? It's probably hard for you to recall distinguishing features about most of the Republican candidates. Maybe you don’t know what Ted Cruz sounds like, except that he sounds like a jerk. Why? In part it's because women’s voices are scrutinized more. It's also because Clinton has been in the public eye for far longer. The conventional wisdom about Clinton's character has fully matured, but it's still forming for her potential Republican competitors, like a cicada grub nestled underground. Despite our collective sexist tendencies, the Republican candidates' voices will eventually get some attention.

A politician's voice shapes how we see him. Take, for example, Lenny Bruce’s early 1960s imitation of Lyndon Johnson. "They didn't let him talk for the first six months," Bruce says. "It took him six months to learn how to say negro." He imagines handlers trying to teach Johnson to say “negro,” but the sound of the n-word keeps slipping through. In frustration, Bruce-as-Johnson yelps, "I cain't hep it! I cain't say it! ... Lemme show mah scar." Johnson had a reputation as crude and uncultured. Of course, he went on to sign landmark civil rights laws.

To even imagine this petty woman with kankles and a pantsuit sitting in the oval office is truly mind numbing. To even contemplate such a scene requires liberals to have a mental disease—no wait, never mind.

Bingo.

She has had a voice coach for some time. I believe ever since she pulled that “shrill shrew” scream about, “WE HAVE A RIGHT TO QUESTION OUR GOVERNMENT!!!! THIS IS AMERICA!!!!

Her feedback from handlers put her through the proper paces after that and well before the debates of 2008. She cooperated.

A woman reaching a shrill pitch makes everyone crazy and they get dismissed as too hysterical to be taken seriously.

Isn’t there a microphone that makes your voice better. Don’t some singers and Obama use that tech?

That’s the problem I had with SP.

Every American has an accent. Perhaps you don’t hear Kansas/Chicago

Yes, Americans speak American English. I didn't include Kansas, as they have Southern inflection.

All the rest I mentioned speak properly, according to dictionary pronunciation rules. New Yorkers and New Englanders do not.

Broadcasters either have or learn the Midwestern speech pattern. I would say that despite everything I hate about Hitlary...she has no accent.

It's a signal processing device called a "graphic equalizer"...it can cut out the highs and boost the lows..and maybe they use a little "digital delay" for some added resonance.

Why should conservatives hate Hillary's voice when they put up every weekday morning with Fox & Friends' Elisabeth Hasselbeck's overly-rapid-fire, high-pitched, chirping, MOSTLY-UNINTELLIGIBLE voice.....a voice which makes one want to run for the hills and hide out in deep cave somewhere.

She has even admitted publicly that her voice is annoying. She is horribly miscast as a commentator.

Hasslebeck's munchkin chattering is without doubt today's most irritating female voice on TV pundit programs....followed closely by the high-piping throat emanations of F & F Sunday morning hostess, Hasselbeck look-alike, Anna Kooiman, whose piping, annoying, breakneck-speed voice shows she's in training to emulate or even exceed that of Hasselbeck's (although not possible, methinks).

Listening to these women speak almost makes me long for the return of liberal erstwhile CNN "analyst", Susan Estrich, who has the rasping voice of a long-time smoker of crushed, dried lotus flowers.

Elisabeth, Anna, Shrillary...take note of the words of a very astute gentleman, a master of the English language, a poet and a playwright.....

"Her voice was ever soft, quiet and low, an excellent thing in a woman"
(Shakespeare..."King Lear")

“Can’t deal wit BOs voice.”

Obama’s voice is ok as is George W. Bush’s. The problem this empty vessel of a writer is missing is that you can tire of any voice particularly if you are a political junkie, hang on the president’s every word because you support or want to criticize him. [It is true what comes out of Obama’s mouth irritates me much more than what comes out of Bush’s mouth, but we are talking voices here.]

Bush and Obama wore thin on many people after 6ish years. The public was not so tired of either after 4 to not reelect them.

So, as the author asks and fails to answer, what is the issue of Hillary Clinton’s voice. Well a huge part of it is 1992. That is right, we started hearing her voice pretty frequently during the 1992 presidential election. That was 14 years ago. That was twice as long as it took many people to tire of the voice of Obama or G.W. Bush.

Imagine having the same boss or the same teacher for 14 years. You think you might tire of them? Heck the only way you can stand the voice of your parents, spouse and children for so long is that you better love them. Few love politician or candidates.

So Hillary Clinton’s friends in the media did not do her much of the favor they thought they were doing her by pushing her forward in the media for the last 14 years. We have naturally tired of her voice particularly those who do not like or are neutral about what she says.

Nixon was in a similar situation and he just went away from 1962 until 1968 making his voice somewhat fresh in 1968. Sarah Palin might be better positioned to attract votes this time around than Hillary because she too simply went away from public notice for the last several years.

I can’t stand her voice for the same reasons I can’t stand fingernails raked across a chalk board or brown paper skimming across pavement...

There are many who don’t like Sarah Palin because of her voice and manner of speaking. That’s the least of my issues with Clinton.

i’m not sure why everyone seems to be writing off Hillary’s campaign.

sure, in a fair election she wouldn’t stand a chance.

however, we all know that the democRATS have been gaming elections for the past 20+ years so that they don’t have to compete on a level playing field. the RINOs are so clueless they don’t even realize that before the first REAL vote is cast, they are already in the hole by millions of fraudulent votes.

...and why is nobody doing away with those abominable open primaries that some states now have. those are an insult to free and fair elections.

if a RINO gets the nomination in 2016, the Republicans will lose. guaranteed.

Content matters more than the voice. Find an actual recording of Patton’s voice. You’ll be surprised.

Historians say that A. Lincoln had a high pitched, squeaky voice.

Her voice is the most annoying since Algore..yes, very condescending, like Algore, as though they are speaking to a room full of 7 year old.

Typical. They say that if you don’t like Hillary’s grating, arrogant voice, it means you don’t want a woman to be powerful. OF COURSE they use all that data to prove that. You are a sexist if you don’t like hillary. Must be.

If a gay man had Ted Cruz’s voice (and probably many of them do), libs would think it wonderful.

I have transcribed Hillary for various news companies and I can tell you that she's wonderful to type because ... she ... talks ... like ... she ... is... speaking ... to ... a ... five ... year ... old ... child.

In other words, condescending as hell.
