IN the wake of the Michael Brown shooting and subsequent unrest in Ferguson, Mo., commentators noted the absence of black representatives among Fergusons elected officials and its police leadership. A Department of Justice report highlighted how Fergusons mostly white City Council and its courts spurred on explicitly racist policing, in part to harvest fines from black residents.
Then came Baltimore. The death of Freddie Gray, like those of Eric Garner, John Crawford III, Rekia Boyd and so many other unarmed African-Americans, at first seemed to fit the all-too-familiar template white cops, black suspect, black corpse.
But unlike New York, Chicago and other cities with white leaders, Baltimore has a black mayor, a black police commissioner and a majority-black City Council. Yet the city still has one of the most stained records of police brutality in recent years.
In the absence of a perceptible white power structure, the discussion around Baltimore has quickly turned to one about the failings of black culture. This confuses even those who sympathize with black hardship. When people took to the streets and destroyed property, most observers did not see an understandable social response to apparent state inaction. They saw, in the words of Baltimores mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, thugs, or in the words of President Obama, criminals and thugs.
To be fair, the mayor later expressed regret, and both she and the president have tried to show empathy for the dispossessed. But they are also fighting myths about degenerate black culture. Condemning criminals and thugs seems to get them away from beliefs about broad black inferiority.
Yet when black people of influence make these arguments, it prevents us from questioning Baltimore the way we questioned Ferguson.

Yeah, somewhere else...like Africa, the deep Congo.
What's next, urban cannibalism?
Boo-hoo. The US taxpayers have had trillions of their income confiscated in the last 50 years on spending for The Poor. They are now a coddled class of parasites, whose only requirement by the government that feeds, clothes, educates, medicates, and incarcerates them is that they vote Democrat.
Enough is enough.
I’m at a loss to understand what can be extrapolated about the Michael Brown case, other than that he had a death wish, and it was granted.
Would a Black mayor have changed this?
Would a Black Police Chief have changed this?
Would a number of Black city council members have changed this?
No.
That’s a very hard thing for the Black community and the enabling press to come to terms with, but people who are evil don’t give a fig about who is the mayer, or what color all the city managers are.
If they did, there would be no crime in the U. S. today in Black communities. We have what they consider to be a Black president.
Race relations have been set back about 50 years since Obama became president.
There is more racial strife than there has been since the mid-1960s.
In some ways, things are far worse than the 60s. Emboldened Blacks are now killing White people for sport, and the media, local, and national politicians don’t care.
Many trillions of dollars later, welfare, food stamps, free medical care, housing subsidies... you name it, none of it has convinced Blacks that anyone cares for them or has tried to improve their lot in life.
That being the case, for heaven’s sake, stop all of it.
We don’t get any return on these dollars.
Just end it.
Perhaps in the months after all that graft has been stopped, one Black community inhabitant might just think to themselves, hmmm, things used to be better last year.
Maybe I should have been happier then.
Then again, Al, Jessie, and the nation’s media will focus on the loss, and not the outreach that they scorned as they trashed the nation.
Probably true....if they're RATs.
Sorry NYT.
That culture is EXACTLY the problem.
Doesn’t pass the laugh test.
I LOLed the moment I read the headline.
Everyone KNOWS Black Culture is broken. The NYT asserting otherwise is ostrich-like.
OK, but yes it is.
It is a culture of dependency and bitterness nurtured by white liberals for political purposes.
Can’t be ‘Rats. The first requirement of soul searching is that you must possess a soul.
"Black culture" isn't the problem.
Liberalism is the problem.
"Black culture" is only a symptom of the problem.
By calling a nationwide state of emergency on the problem of residential segregation (solution, move of these rioting individuals into white neighborhoods)
by devising a fairer tax structure (by taxing the producers even more)
by investing in public space (giving away more in welfare)
community policing (Like George Zimmerman?)
tenants rights (to take away from landlord’s rights)
and a government jobs program (just invest a few more dollars)
, our leaders can find a way forward. (and all these black problems will just vanish!)
So, let’s see. If there are Whites in charge, they are to blame. If there are no Whites in charge, the Blacks are still not to blame, but the Whites are.
Has the Slimes looked around the world at black culture. Name one black majority socio-political structure that is not a chaotic hell hole, or fast on its way to being one.
Funny how the one common denominator in all the race baiting events is black thugs playing the I’m a victim card.
Uh, Freddie Gray was not unarmed: He had a knife, and that was one of the reasons he was arrested.
I'm pretty sure the denizens of the religion forum would beat you like a drum on that.
But given that they probably do have a soul, they seem totally retarded or possessed, depending on the political grade of the RAT.

“But unlike New York, Chicago and other cities with white leaders, Baltimore (EAST SAINT LOUIS, GARY IN, CAMDEN NJ, DETROIT, FLINT MI, NEWARK NJ, OAKLAND, ETC, ETC) ARE BLACK CULTURAL CITIES
Thank you.
Yes, and even people on the left are starting to leave the fold regarding racial matters. I visit the ‘race realist” sites, I’ve been reading the comments for some years. It’s not just us rayciss conservatives who are opening our eyes. When people on the left start to squawk, the foundation will start rocking.
