Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer praised Florida Sen Marco Rubio at the National Review Institutes Ideas Summit Friday, saying he is a very strong candidate.
Ahead of presumed 2016 announcements by Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and Mike Huckabee, Krauthammer told National Reviews Rich Lowry that Rubio is the perfect antithesis to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. He said Rubio is the candidate Democrats fear the most.
Marco is a very strong candidate, Krauthammer started. You can see a route for him, and hes the perfect antithesis to Hillary. If you ask Democrats who they fear the most, I think the answer is Marco. Hes the perfect foil. New vs. young you dont have to stress that, it just presents itself.
When Kennedy ran in 1960, Nixon was about his age, but he basically ran against Eisenhower. He talked about the new and the new frontier, Krauthammer told Lowry. Remember what he said in his inaugural address? Kind of a slight at Eisenhower. After all he did win the second World War. Kennedy said the torch has been passed to a new generation. I think the generational contrast is huge. I think the baggage contrast is huge.
Since January, Krauthammer has been betting on Rubio winning the GOP nomination literally. In each of his Friday appearances on Special Report, he has placed the majority of his allotted $100 on Rubio pulling off the 2016 win on the GOP side.
One other thing. The thing about Rubio is foreign policy is going to be a far more important issue in this campaign than it ever was, Krauthammer continued. Generally, it never is because Americans are not exactly interested in what happens overseas for obvious reasons.
Rubio, who I think the best articulator of the interventionist/activist American view. He benefits and has already. He expresses it with absolute sincere passion, the way only a son of immigrants can. Im the son of immigrants, I know exactly how he feels, the conservative commentator said. He doesnt have to do it off cue cards, he doesnt have to be prompted. He believes in American exceptionalism and you believe him. And that I think is going to be very important as foreign policy and our defeats and our embarrassments begin to rise.
On the other side, Krauthammer was unsurprisingly harsh on Clinton during the lightning round of questions on 2016 candidates.
Hillary Clinton, Lowry told Krauthammer, who paused for nearly 10 seconds before saying anything.
Im just winding up, he told a chuckling Lowry. You throw me a hanging curve ball, Im not swinging early.
Dont you love the way they said on Friday there is no shred of evidence for any of this. Well of course not. She shredded the evidence, Krauthammer said as the attendees erupted in laughter.
My bottom line shes a lot weaker candidate than Democrats think. This is a big mistake on their part, Krauthammer said. She has a constituency that is very loyal, but she has a lot of people equally fixed on their view of her.
The number of undecideds about Hillarys candidacy probably seven people. They all live in northern New Hampshire in a shack with no running water, and they are all related to each other, he said to laughter. I dont think shes going to persuade a lot of people, and I do think shes a weak candidate. Look what she did in the rollout when she said I left the White House broke we had trouble paying the mortgage on our houses. Politics 101: when pleading poverty, do not refer to your domiciles in the plural. Doesnt work.
WATCH (Starts at 43:45):
Krauthammer, who supported ObamaCARE,
and then Obama, and then Romney,
is NOTHING BUT A CRIMINAL ENABLER,
a complicit MSM-enabler of all sociopaths.
Ted Cruz is who they fear the most. Not just the media and the Democrats, but also the Democrats in R jerseys.
I’d wager to say that most of us on FR would no longer the claim GOP as “our” party. Most of us are conservatives first. If the GOP lines up with us...we will support. If not, we won’t.
Just being “not the Democrat” is not enough to win most true conservative’s vote.
Actually, Doc, Senator Cruz and Governor Walker are!
Senator Rubio is second tier. I like him, but he is not quite ready for Prime Time!
You mean the Lack of Voting don't you? After all, it was the stay at Homers that gave us Obama just as the folks who voted for that big eared paranoid crackpot named Ross Perot that gave us Clinton back in 1992..........
I applaud your comment! So far, folks have said they won't vote for Rubio and instead will vote for Hillary. Others have said they won't vote of Cruz and will stay home. The latest comment is that Scott Walker will never get their vote.........
So you're looking at probably the three most conservative candidates in our party and already people are saying they won't vote for them...........
So who is left to line up with bro????
Like I've said before, it's the Purists and the Homers who will give us another democrap..................
As expected, Krauthammer got his marching orders.
Was somebody expecting him to say differently ..??
And .. for him to say the DemocRATS “fear Rubio the most” is just laughable.
I don’t hear the likes of McCain calling Rubio by the name of “whackobird”.
So .. I will totally discount Krauthammer’s comments.
Yes, definitely a plant.
Flawless.
This man needs to retire.
I think I miss your point, none of the above are running for president in 2016........I thought I was addressing the current front runners of Cruz, Rubio and Walker and the comments from folks here who say they won't support them in the election if they are nominated.......
Please correct me if I'm wrong......
He’s been hawking for Rubio on the Fox News panel for a good while. I don’t know anyone who is excited by Rubio.
Lol
That can not be repeated enough.
Marco Rubio does not have the maturity or judgement to be President. Kraut is really wrong on this one.
2016 needs to be about ridding the body politic of LIEberals!
Vote AGAINST the Democrats and GOPes, and let us work to create a truly Conservative Party!
Will being “Not a Democrat” or “Not a RINO” or “Not a GOPe” work?
Absolutely. Whoever gets the nomination, we're counting on to oppose the Democrats. And we need candidates with track records of them doing that. I have a favorite, but if they don't get the nomination, then the one who beats them better have that track record.
I pulled the handle for Dole, McCain, and Romney. So I am not the stay-at-home type. But how we set ourselves up with these weak candidates who can't beat Democrats that are demonstrably worse continues to amaze me.
