Rumors have circulated through social media and on some websites that Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old Baltimore man who died April 19 after he was injured while in police custody, had a previous spinal injury that caused his death. The rumors also claim that Gray had spinal fusion surgery not long before his arrest to repair an injury caused by a car accident, which he received an insurance settlement for.

or the other way around
Too many cops today are soldier wannabes who are unwilling to fight in a real warmup want to play soldier with their fellow citizens. Just as much thugs as the animals in Baltimore but far more dangerous as the have the courts on their side as well as the gangsta PBA and FOP.
I agree we really need to avoid speculation. It is interesting, though, that the authorities have really clamped down and no one involved seems to be talking to media sources.
Nothing new with that. What is new is the Chief of Police is not covering for them. That's remarkable on its own.
Well that particular crowd ain't exactly into strategic thinking.
Hire an attorney like OJ’s attorney. Then you can beat city/county hall!
That story is pathetic.
Here is email that I sent to the BS reporters:
The fact of the matter is that Free Republic is not the source for this rumor disguised as a new story. It was posted on the FR forum from a blog fourthestate.co.
There then ensued a discussion that now has over 200 comments. Within an hour and a half, one of the posters, Conscience of a Conservative, had found out the facts of the matter; and he did not even have to visit the Court House.

Perhaps you would wish to enlarge and extend your story to give full and proper coverage of Free Republics real investigative reporting?

Talking about some of the comments in those threads, BTW.
I think that the video shows that he was injured before the police drug him to the cruiser. If he crashed on his bicycle he could have been suffering something like this;
http://www.sott.net/article/251718-Woman-Survives-Rare-Internal-Decapitation
“Internal decapitation, or atlanto-occipital dislocation, occurs when head trauma separates the skull from the spinal column while leaving the exterior of the neck intact.
According to a 2006 study in the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine, the sensation of instability that results when part or all of the spinal column is severed in a still-conscious person “may cause patients to experience the sensation that their ‘head is falling off.’”
Because the types of head injury that can cause internal decapitation usually also involve severe nerve damage or the severing of the spinal cord, the usual result is paralysis or death.
Bailey escaped those fates handily, but she says she can’t remember anything from the month-and-a-half period starting a few days before the crash.
Though her nearly full recovery is very rare, it isn’t unique. Among her new colleagues in the tiny subset of people who have survived an internal decapitation is Shannon Malloy, a Nebraska woman who, in 2007, emerged from a car crash without paralysis and in good enough shape to talk to the press a few months later.”
Here is a list of accidents that involve internal decapitation.

I think that an accident before hand makes the most sense. The police failed to provide him medical care that worsened the injury and contributed to or resulted in his death.
I wouldn’t believe any single word in the Baltimore Sun.
The video is quite damning... I don’t think the cops intended to kill him, but the fact is he died due to their aggressive mishandling of him. The Baltimore cops have had many suits filed against them... hopefully some good will come at the end of all of this.
In protests, sometimes the people would go all limp force the police to drag them. In this instance his feet do not appear to be moving, does not appear to be the case. I suppose that it is a medical issue that the coroner will have to sort out.
Can you tell us what on earth makes you think that the governor of Maryland is an “idiot,” like the Baltimore mayor?
When he realized what was happening, he should have had the National Guard mobilized and down there a lot sooner. Once they showed up, things immediately improved. He waited too damn long. This was close to an insurrection and even the entire police force was inadequate.
