Several American Airlines flights were delayed Tuesday night after a software glitch occurred in the Apple iPads provided to pilots, forcing authorities to return planes to the gates to fix the malfunction, the Verge reported. The affected flights reportedly included AA2413, AA2276, AA1654, AA235 and AA128.
Passengers were reportedly asked to exit the aircraft. American Airlines first confirmed the issue to a passenger, named Bill Jacaruso, who was traveling to Austin from Dallas/Fort Worth airport on flight AA1654.
Some flights are experiencing an issue with a software application on pilot iPads, Andrea Huguely, a spokeswoman for the American Airlines, told the Verge. In some cases, the flight has had to return to the gate to access a Wi-Fi connection to fix the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers. We are working to have them on the way to their destination as soon as possible.
Another representative for the airline said that the issue, which had affected "a few dozen flights," had been identified and that a fix was being worked on.

Excuse me? Jeppeson wrote and publishes the software and the databases that are used by the airlines for the Jeppeson FlightDeck . Jeppeson is a private company not affected with Apple except in that they produce a software product that runs on an Apple product as well as on a Microsoft product. YOU are delusional to claim that Jeppeson's software is an Apple software product.
Wow. Delusonal . . . doesn't even begin to describe the level of insanity of that conclusion.
A few flights? American Airlines reports their entire 737 fleet was affected. And see Sparky AGAIN you have missed the picture. First if you had read my postings I said the APP glitched. Now the APP system was designed by...
Wait for it...
Wait for it...
Apple.
Their system is setup to be a single point of failure. One App update OR one software update can render the units so it will not work properly AND BY FAA rules since the unit is in essence the flight plan and the flight plan and documentation is then not available on the flight the plane must be grounded.
And as I am sure you know Apple has issued glitchy updates that cause problems with the units. (can you say Apple Maps debacle? I know you can...)
So to review. FAA approves iPads to be used as Flightplan/documentation for Flights in the USA.
as has been pointed out by a Freeper claiming to be a certified pilot those FAA rules state that if you don't have the flight docs on board the plane doesn't fly.
And as is painfully obvious to anyone with an IQ above 70 an app OR the entire OS can be glitched by an update as you have pointed out ("Frankly, it could, but it has not yet."
And being apparently no one thought to have a backup plan my question is if Apple has an OS glitch that makes the units not perform to the standards the FAA has set, or an app renders the same situation with an update then do the planes just sit there or does someone figure out that Hardcopy should be available so the planes can fly till Apple or the App creator gets a fix?
There are several other stories claiming the enire AA 737 fleet. Star Sparky claimed 5 planes only, then it was a dozen then several dozen now I see stories claiming 70 planes plus and then the entire 737 fleet on AA.
So lets go with 50 plus. and being a 737 holds around 200. then it's safe to assume that somewhere between 2500 and 10,000 passengers were affected. Yeah sure just a little tiny problem hahahahah.
Apple's software allows App updates. App updates can glitch the unit so it does not perform to FAA standards thus Apple's software Apple's fault.
Not unless ...
At first glance I was afraid that it was *passengers’* iPads that were causing it.
Look for upcoming generations of pilots' heads to be increasingly empty.
You do not know what you are talking about. Apple did not make the APP. Jeppeson made the App. These are easily proved facts!
Apple made the OPERATING SYSTEM and the hardware which did not "glitch" and did not crash! Get it through your neutronium dense skull Apple had nothing to do with this . . .
Jeppeson Aviation, a company owned by Boeing, made the APP which could not handle a duplicate chart in its database, which Apple had nothing to do with except it ran on Apple's hardware, just as it runs on Microsoft's Windows hardware.
American Airlines reports their entire 737 fleet was affected.
Learn to read for comprehension, Mad Dawgg, not for emotion.
You have been told by people who do understand quite well what has happened here . . . but you are so determined to blame Apple that you are blinded by your delusions and your emotions. The problem was solved in just a few minutes.
READ WHAT I TOLD YOU ABOUT THE REST OF AMERICAN AIRLINE'S FLEET.
I have read a lot more on this "glitch" than is in this one mistaken article. . . Other articles covered it in a lot more detail covering the actual cause and the solutions undertaken, most of which required downloading a new version of the FlightDeck App for the rest of the Fleet with an updated database, and using a PDF version of the Ronald Reagan International Airport Chart for the flights going there on their iPads.
There was no grounding of AA's 737 entire fleet. NOR did they require the rest of the pilots to not use their iPads. As I told you, the only flights that had a problem were those where the flight plans included a stop at Ronald Reagan International Airport. ONLY THOSE FLIGHTS. . . none of the others would even see the problem because they would not load the duplicate chart.
Ergo, all your histrionic, emotive blow-hard bloviating on this thread is pointless, especially where you are ignorantly trying to blame Apple for a problem that is inherently a Jeppeson Aviation software glitch in their database.
You anti-apple people are so delusional you cannot see how rabidly insane you appear when you cannot accept that you are at all wrong about anything.
The flight was saved because of the odd information that happened to be in the pilots head. With an iPad, that kind of information can be in every cockpit on every flight.
...
There’s avionics these days that have the same information. Some of the portable versions are very affordable.
It had to do with politics, namely Canada's decision to be more progressive about fuel measurement than its uncouth big brother to the south.
From the Wikipedia:
The subsequent investigation revealed a combination of company failures and a chain of human errors that defeated built-in safeguards. Fuel loading was miscalculated due to a misunderstanding of the recently adopted metric system which replaced the imperial system.
Wow another entry on the fallacy hit parade first ad hominem and now a Red Herring...
Neither was asserted or claimed. what was claimed is the entire AA 737 fleet was "affected"...
Got it now Sparky? Now back to your fallacy hit parade. I bet you can get us an Appeal to Motive in there...
Oh wait, already happened. My bad...
hahahaha
I said several, not five. Try to read what I say, not what you wish I said and understand HOW the fleet was merely minorly affected, not grounded, by having to update their Jeppeson software databases, you idiot.
However, planes are delayed every day. You are changing the tenor of the argument. Five planes were required to return to the terminal to connect to a WIFI. Those passengers were deplaned. Others were merely delayed while a PDF file of Ronald Reagan International Airport was loaded on the Pilot's and Co-Pilot's iPads, and a new version of the FlightDeck software was loaded with an older version of the database that did not have the doubled chart. The rest of the fleet will merely have to download the new update. . . they were affected only in that their FlightDeck software had the same database, because they ALL use the identical software. Can't you grasp that simple fact????
The number of potential people delayed is irrelevant. That's the fallacy of appealing to bad consequences.
One problem with that scenario. Avionics are not ever on the same network as the WIFI that passengers are allowed to access. Nor are they connected by a WIFI networking system. No need for a Firewall with worry about Firewall vulnerabilities if the hacker on the WIFI never encounters the firewall in the first place. Problem solved.
Information in one's head is not the same as information that may or may not be in a database somewhere, if you can find it (which is admittedly far more likely if there is at least a faint clue in your head!).
If you need to land a heavy glider pronto, you are not going to be up for an extended google.
That's nice and AGAIN you got it wrong. Star Sparky, not Sword Sparky...
Try and keep up.
Can't you grasp that simple fact????"
Ahh Sparky you are trying to obfuscate the fact that the system is designed in such a way one update can render the units to be gltchy to the point that the FAA sez the planes can't fly until the matter is fixed.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT SPARKY?
GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD.
YOU are the idiot who has been claiming that the entire fleet of American Airlines' 737s was affected, leaving people to assume they were grounded, not I. I am not raising any Red Herring by countering your idiotic repetitious claims that the entire fleet was affected. YOU DID. Your implication was referential to the grounding every time. I merely explained exactly what did NOT happen in that "affect" and what did happen in that "affect" That is not bringing up a Red Herring, because I am not re-directing the discussion to that line. It is REBUTTING your implication that all the fleet were grounded as an affect. GOT IT, asshat?
As to Appeal to Motive? We know your motive. . . you demonstrate it with your every post bashing Apple gratuitously regardless of tons of proofs to the contrary. . . and your history on this forum. There is no fallacy to post truth about your motive. Keep laughing. You are joining the ones laughing at your antics.
Only idiots like you assumed. I said affected...
Yes fallacy of motive is an attempt to shut the argument down by hiding the truth behind an alleged motive of the person pointing out the flaws.
Its used by people who know their arguments have gaping holes in them and wish to redirect the attention to something else to cover the fact they are in error.
You are claiming facts not in evidence. Where was the FAA involved in the grounding of these planes? It was not except their general regulations. WOW! You will stoop at nothing including Fantasies from your own mind. No evidence is no evidence. You have built a case on nothing. That makes you an idiot on this. You've been shot down multiple times.
Do you seriously believe that any company will install any upgrade without fully vetting it on mission critical devices? I won't allow my clients to upgrade for at least a year after a new OS release. As I said iOS 8.3 has been out since October 2014. IF American Airlines deployed it then, they've been flying it for six months without a glitch. If they didn't, they've been testing for six months.
You've been using that "Sparky" epithet for months against us, despite repeated requests that you cease and desist. . . insulting us and other Apple users, and bashing Apple. More proof, as if any were needed, of your delusionary hatred against all things Apple and us. Deliberately confusing your "sparks" so you can bash either of us doesn't cut it either. It makes you look extremely petty. But that's ok. You are.
YOU are the one posting untruths on this thread about Apple creating the App that glitched causing this problem. . . and when shown the facts MULTIPLE times you doubled down and claimed it again and again. That's insanity, hatred so intense you have to lie to support it.
No, it is a exposing you for what you are. . . a member of the anti-Apple hate brigade. . . but you did an excellent job of exposing yourself. It is not an attempt to shut down argument, it is exposure of your motive for lying about your case.
Sorry Sparky but now you've went "Full Ad Hominem Retard"
