Senators on Tuesday blocked a Republican push to require a final deal on Iran's nuclear program be submitted to the Senate as a treaty.
Senators voted 39-57 on Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-Wis.) amendment, which was subjected to a 60-vote threshold.
It was the first vote in a series of politically tricky amendments senators are expected to take on a deal reached by Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.). Their agreement gives lawmakers 30 days to pass a resolution of disapproval on any final Iran deal.
Corker suggested ahead of the vote that if the Wisconsin Republican's push was successful, it would likely kill the legislation.
"It will destroy our ability to have any say-so in one of the biggest geopolitical events of our time," he said. "The effect is we would have no role if we were to pass this amendment by Johnson, a friend of mine we will have no role in this."
Corker said earlier Tuesday that he would "love" to be able to make the Iran deal a treaty, but suggested it was unrealistic.
Johnson is one of approximately two dozen Senate Republicans who are offering or have signed onto changes to the Corker-Cardin agreement.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) tried to bring up amendments from 2016 White House hopeful Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) Tuesday, but was blocked by Cardin.
Nine Republicans broke rank and voted against the amendment, including Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) and Johnny Isakson (Ga.). who are up for reelection in 2016.
Presidential hopeful Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) supported the amendment, while his 2016 competitors Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) didn't vote.
The more I think of Corker, the more I think it’s the other way around.
He didn’t get paid. He got blackmailed.
He’s a biz guy from TN, and worth ~ 20 million.
In Construction.
Guys like that always have “stuff”. Money stuff, bad deals, shady deals....they got his number.
Betcha.
Why didn’t Rubio and Cruz vote?
would it have made a difference?
All those Republicans voting against this are to be treated as enemies
As a guy who was in commercial R E for 25 years, I wouldn’t bet against you.
Wait, WHAT?!!!!
And orchestrate this madness under cover of the Baltimore riots. Bastards.
we have a majority and can’t do anything, Dems have minority and can still keep power.
What apathetic lot we have.

Jodi Ernst.
Voting with the RINOs and democrats.
Thanks, Jodi, you suck.
Where is the full list of “Republicans” who voted for this? I hear Levin naming them, and he says there are 12 of them, but this columns says 9 and doesn’t name them all. I did a quick search and didn’t find anything.
Yes. I want them on the record. Why should they get a pass?
The US State Department, AKA 0bama, REFUSES to condemn the firing on and seizure of the US ship by Iran.
Good it was an ill conceived piece of legislation and it subverted the Constitution. Mark Levin was dead on about it.
Message to Congress: The Constitutional remedy for an out of control President is Impeachment.
Why didn’t Cruz and Rubio vote?
This is ridiculous. They’re voting on whether to treat as a treaty a deal between our country and other countries and Iran?
That’s what a treaty is. It is a treaty.
This is simply our senators attempting to play some kind of game that leaves the knowledgeable public baffled. The low info public doesn’t even know there’s a discussion.
These RINO freaks disgust me. I hope Justice finds them...and soon.
There’ve been many reasons to distrust the rinos. I thought the Thad Cochran senate campaign was the worst they’d ever done.
But this is worse. It is lying and scheming against the people, of course. But, this is screwing with national security, in reality it is an attack on Israel, and ultimately, then it is an in-your-face at God.
The senators are obviously part of the islamonazi problem infesting washDC or they’ve sold out to it — same result. Plus a few of them might be playing a political game — letting O crawl right out to the end of the tree branch figuring he’s got things so screwed up that he will fall down for sure. Problem being , tho, that this O deal involves dangerous nuclear bombs in enemy hands -— this ain’t your usual two- bit political football. We are in potentially very dangerous deep doooo dooo - either way now.
More than likely, they're campaigning or fund-raising (or both).
However, note that 96 Senators voted -- Rubio and Cruz plus two other Senators missed the vote, probably Democrats. On votes like this, it's common for Senators from opposing parties to "pair" their votes. Thus, one "Yes" vote and one "No" vote can be away from Senate on other business without impacting the outcome.
