Jeb Bush confronted one of the Republican Party's touchiest debates head-on Tuesday, telling Puerto Ricans that conservatives should be proud that America is "an immigrant nation" and value the contribution immigrants make to the country.
The former Florida governor and 2016 GOP presidential prospect delivered a speech on economic opportunities peppered with Spanish, and his audience responded with hearty applause. He's fluent in the language, and often uses it in Florida, but it's rarely heard in Republican presidential campaign politics.
Immigration is a delicate subject for Bush in the primacy race, with several potential rivals favoring a harder line on those who come to the U.S. illegally. But he took it up unapologetically in his remarks.
"We're an immigrant nation and we should be proud," he said, as someone in the audience yelled, "Yes!"
"We should create an immigration system that drives economic opportunity for all of us," he added. "We should move toward protecting the rule of law, protecting our border, making legal immigration easier than illegal immigration for sure, but we also want to look at this as a huge opportunity."
Said Bush, "The conservative cause would be better to embrace this rather than push it away."

Conservatives implore Jeb to stop implying conservatives are hateful or opposed to legal immigration.
No, señor.
My ancestors (with one exception 100+ years ago) were not immigrants, they were colonists and pioneers.
Just go away, Jeb.
Of course your ancestors were immigrants. Maybe not your immediate ancestors, but going back a few generations they were. Unless your ancestors were Tonto and Sitting Bull.
Am I missing something? Who in their right mind has an issue with immigration (except for the kumbayaers if it’s not the right kind)? It’s the ILLEGAL and disregard for the rule of law part that is the crux of the matter.
Mine too starting in the 1600s, hacking homes out of a howling wilderness.
No our ancestors were not immigrants, Brits moving from British soil to British soil are not immigrants.
My immigrant grandparents came with pasta in their hands :)
No, not immkigrants. They were colonists and pioneers.
Oh and yes, a few of them were indian fighters as well; including one who was with the group that tracked down and apprehended King Philip when he was on the warpath.
My grandparents were immigrants to this country. But they obeyed the law, did it legally, became citizens, learned English and became productive Americans. Do you understand the difference, Jeb, between what my grandparents did and what the current crop of border-jumpers are doing?
If this guy gets the nomination, I’m truly, for the first time, sitting it out. A democrat couldn’t do any more damage than this dolt.
I am opposed to LEGAL immigration if it comes from Pakistan, Somalia, Egypt, etc.
I'm fine with Illegal immigration, in modest numbers, if it's from Poland, Ireland, Estonia, etc.
The source is far, far more important than the "legality".
Are you kidding? Legal immigration is what is killing us, stop it and stop illegal immigration, but the illegals are not what destroyed us, they are just a natural overflow.
This last 130 million people and voters has killed us as a nation, a culture, and made returning to conservatism impossible.
Immigration is what the left depends on for votes and a dependent, socialist, population, that has no ties to the original America, or even Western Civilization.
Run for San Juan Mayor or sumthin..
What a pantload he turned out to be.
Any politician who conflates “immigrant” with “illegal alien” is, if they understand the difference, trying to sell your country out from under you. If they don’t understand the difference, they are too pig ignorant to warrant your attention.
Pandering to the left won’t get them to vote GOPe
Jeb is McCain II. Chosen as our candidate by the UN NWO cabal so that if Hillary loses THEY still win. FUJB.
