After two previous extensions, the open enrollment period for Covered California ends April 30. That deadline just might prove to be the tipping point for the states two-year-old health insurance exchange.
Thats because this is the year Covered California is supposed to become completely self-sustaining.
Indeed, theres no more money coming from Washington after the state exhausts the $1.1 billion it received from the federal government to get the Obamacare exchange up and running. And state law prohibits Sacramento from spending any money to keep the exchange afloat.
That presents an existential crisis for Covered California, which is facing a nearly $80 million budget deficit for its 2015-16 fiscal year. Although the exchange is setting aside $200 million to cover its near-term deficit, Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee acknowledged in December that there are questions about the long-term sustainability of the organization.

It’s not fair!
Maybe we could send the bill to Mexico?
Undoubtedly they would be more then willing to help out.
My accountant informed me last week that it is scary how large a difference it is between what people (his clients) think they owe and what they actually owe the IRS related to Obamacare. In essence, the debt the citizenry will owe the government will be the next major financial crisis. Something will have to give.

I’m sure Gov. Moonbeam will come up with a solution!
Absolutely! It will be deemed too big to fail and the government will take over the entire health insurance industry. It will then resort to single payer.
It was the plan all along.
Did the MORONS in DC or Sacramento really think that people who did not bother with coverage before Obastard Care would pay for coverage after Obastard Care?
Most of these LOWLIFES don’t have or WANT a real job, so what are the State and the Feds going to do?
Issue them a fine that they will not pay, put them in jail?
Can’t lock them all up and they sure as hell are not going to pay the fine.
Any rational person would chose to pay a few hundred dollars for the fine rather than pay $4,000 per year for a $6,000 deductible policy. If you get sick or have an accident you can buy the health insurance policy after you go to the hospital. After you get better you stop paying the health insurance premiums.
Yeah but they fixed the health care problem in America!
Zero will bail them out. all part of the plan
Yeah sure they fixed it alright. They fixed it by destroying the best healthcare system in the world. I am seriously considering the possibility of going to Mexico for healthcare. Don’t laugh. Mexicans who cannot pay do not get into the hospitals and there are no malpractice lawsuits there. Healthcare there is dramatically cheaper.
Karma is a bitch.
If you say “California” and “government” in same sentence I don’t think anymore can be said.

1) Tens of millions of dollars for ‘health care navigators’ to assist people signing up.
2) Hundreds of millions of dollars spent on advertising and promotion.
3) Tens of millions of dollars spent contributing to liberal organizations.
So what this is all about isn’t about Covered California staying afloat - there’s no danger of that happening, especially with all the novelty taxes involved in the state. Nope, what’s in danger is the gravy train to liberal organizations, the payroll for thousands of people who might occasionally help someone fill out paperwork, and millions of dollars of advertising income.
OC Register, who has accepted hundreds of ads from Covered California, of course is reporting on none of this spending. Shock.
I’ve been crying ever since I read this.
Calif. is doomed.
You win an all expenses trip to Tijuana!!
There Fixed It
I wouldn't go there with secret service protection.
The cartels might be paying the expenses. LOL
