Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was glad the merger didnt go through.
Comcasts withdrawal of its bid to merge with Time Warner Cable is good for the American consumer and it shows that our regulatory and legal system work, de Blasio said in a statement. We need more competition to bring down prices and ensure a democratic internet for all. The merger would have further concentrated market power in the cable and broadband sectors and created even greater barriers to the Citys goals of universal, affordable high-speed Internet access. One of the concerns consumer advocates and competitors had with the Comcast deal was that it could undermine the streaming video industry that is reshaping TV.
Comcast could, for example, require onerous payments from new online-only video providers for connecting to its network. Dish, the satellite TV company behind the new Web video service Sling TV, and Netflix opposed the deal.
