After originally deciding to screen the movie, the University of Maryland has reversed course and instead has canceled an upcoming showing of American Sniper on campus.
The schools conservative group released this statement in response:
The University of Maryland Student Entertainment Events (SEE) decided to screen American Sniper on May 6 and 7, 2015. After meeting with concerned student organizations, SEE has decided to postpone the movie.
If the University prevents a movie like this from being shown, it promotes intolerance and stifles dialogue and debate on the subject and goes directly against the atmosphere of diversity the University of Maryland purports to provide.
The university decided to cancel the screening after outcry from Muslim students on campus. The Muslim Students Association at the University of Maryland even started a petition requesting that the school pull the screening of American Sniper. In the petition, the group stated that the film perpetuates the spread of Islamaphobia and is offensive to many Muslims around the world for good reason.
Ironically enough, the group also requested that students exercise their freedom of speech by signing the petition to remove the film from campus. MSA seemingly got their wish this morning when the school decided to cancel the screening.
The University of Maryland is only one of several campuses that have faced student outcry for screening, or attempting to screen, the Oscar-winning film. Just recently, the Young Americans for Freedom chapter at the University of Michigan protested their schools decision to cancel a campus screening. Their protests were successful as the school eventually decided to show the film as planned.

USNA should screen it in the football stadium.
I guess these liberal colleges are only open to the right kind of free speech and free expression.
NEWSFLASH - you are nearly 40 too late!! Universities have been doing this to conservative ideas since the 1960’s. Only the most wacked-out ultra liberal ideas should expect any acceptance.
There are no Jim Harboughs at College Park to stand up to the leftists and Muslims.
The University of Maryland is run by cowardly, incompetent, politically correct liberals. They will fold like a cheap suit.
Universities respond to pain and money. Conservatives at UMD need to make the cost of this cancellation greater than the cost of going ahead. This is one small chapter in the war for the psyche of the US and it needs to be treated as a war.

Students can't go to a commercial theater, request it from Netflix, etc.?
Just because all of the terrorists in the world are Muslims is no reason to link them ti Islam./s
Maybe they’ll show “Hot Chocolate” 0bamacare boy video’s instead.
And, where is the outcry from these Muslim students in relation to what their fellow Muslim terrorists are doing in the Middle East? crickets - crickets - crickets.
As an alumnus of U of M, I can attest that your are 100% accurate.
They have, they do, and they will.
No surprise. This country’s universities have basically become leftwing she woman man haters clubs. Why would anyone think screening a patriotic war movie would go over well?
Sure they can. But that's not the point.
I know. I just have these attacks of rationality.
What’s next - book burning rallies?
I remember the Nazi students protesting whenever WWII movies were shown on college campuses.
They felt that the movies were anti-Nazi. /s
My kid is a graduate student at UMD. That sucks.
Censorship by a government institution. Grounds for a federal civil rights lawsuit.
I am an alum as well.
When I was a student, the Story of O was shown at the Hoffman theater. Apparently, no problems with showing an S&M bondage film but don’t pollute our minds with movies about an American hero.
