SALEM, Ore. (AP) - With Oregon Democrats moving forward on a bill to require background checks for private gun sales, the potential political backlash is becoming apparent.
Gun rights advocates last week filed petitions to recall three Democratic lawmakers who sponsored the legislation, and they say more could follow.

Recall elections in THIS COUNTRY’s modern history go back to the early 20th century when progressives in their fervor to “reform” everything, pushed for them. Since you are apparently an expert on the subject I’m surprised you didn’t know that.
Whatever, this is pointless.
“Whatever, this is pointless.”
Agreed. History and facts are bothersome for you.
I’m not sure what relevance recall of delegates to the continental congress by the MA General Court that has to do modern recall elections of elected officials by citizen petition. Actually, I am, it has none.
My question would be is that any different than it is today? And wouldn’t the change in information transmission throughout society serve to temper the extremist Senators?
Addendum:
Also, from the list of respondents, read the commentary of Mr. Dave Loduca, as he truly sets the issues in proper focus

The article itself makes it pretty plain, the 17th isn’t going anywhere at this point. These debates we have here on a frequent basis are academic. I think our energies would be better spent on finding other ways to reign in big government.
I’ve suggested that anyone employed by the federal government (exclusive of military/law enforcement) or those receiving government payments (taxpayers money, again exclusive of payments they themselves have put in) should forfeit their right to vote until such time they are no longer employed in such or receiving said payments.
Another suggestion is repeal of civil service and a return to patronage. Trash in, trash out, so to speak. You come in with an administration for 4 or 8 years, and you leave with it. No lifelong sinecures. We have armies of left-leaning bureaucrats proliferating ever larger government with each day, insulated from reality (from the taxpayers, from market downturns). D.C. and its environs continue to live in a perpetual environment of Nirvana, and are directly responsible for our being almost $20 trillion in debt with liabilities that are multiples of that. This is frightening beyond anything, especially what repeal of the 17th would be able to accomplish even under the most idealistic of fantasies.
In some ways, it isn’t different. But it’s easier to bribe a small number of legislators than it is the entire electorate of a given state.
The added problem is that several states would cease to be competitive (MA, CA, for 2 examples). Therefore you’d have stooges of an already corrupt and dysfunctional body, ever-increasing leftist extremism. Also badly gerrymandered states would prevent any turnover. California was supposed to improve once it implemented term limits in the early ‘90s. For about 5 minutes, the GOP won control of the Assembly for the first time since the ‘60s. After 1996, they lost it and the body has become a bigger and more extremist joke and turnover or revolving door of different faces but the same ideology, and is now a Third World hellhole insulated by rich leftist enclaves living in a fantasy world isolated from the reality of their politics.
Ultimately, it would be a vicious contest to see which Senator could loot from the treasury more on behalf of his state and cause. Even sensible states like Texas would not be immune to this. Even if you could patch together a bloc of Conservatives from the GOP, you would frequently see the Democrat and RINO groups combining forces to elect leftist RINOs to the Senate.
All in all, very ugly.
Did you read through the responses? I thought some very good points were made.
But, as far as what is “academic” - I would have to respond that it is mathematically impossible for this nation to pay the $20+ trillion debt. If you think “multiples” of unfunded liabilities is a nightmare ... Take a look into derivatives exposure - credit default swaps and sovereign debt in particular - that by act of recent banking legislation (drafted under great influence of CitiBank, in which the Saudi Royals hold a controlling interest - think hedging on oil profit losses) every U.S. taxpayer is now on the hook to underwrite if default occurs!
Bottom line - The United States is finished as a nation. It will go insolvent. And then will come civil war ... And with that, our argument over the 17th Amendment will be, in comparison, an insignificant footnote.
Yes, I read through some of the responses. One of the greatest, ultimately perhaps THE greatest mistake the Founders made was not placing a Balanced Budget clause into the Constitution. Many states have that, including (ironically) Massachusetts (which is why many leftists have crowed about how people like Dukakis and Deval Patrick “balanced the budget.” That’s because it’s required. Think they’d have done so if it wasn’t ?).
The BBA should be implemented at once, and nothing should be taken “off budget” (which is the poison pill). Drastic, across-the-board cuts must be made, and not down the line but right now. Tax increases cannot accomplish covering added spending. You reach a level of diminishing returns every time it’s jacked up. “The rich”, as the leftists claim, don’t have enough money to pay for our beyond-astronomical debts, and that they’re smart enough to be rich, they’re also smart enough to find ways to keep the government from getting their money.
Tough choices will have to be made, or as you said, the next civil war will come and the epic battle between the producer class and the governmental theft class and their armies of racist-screaming gibsmedats. Ultimately, when we finally smarten up, we’ll see that participation in elections and decisionmaking processes in this nation should be a privilege, not an automatic right. The difference between a Republic (which we are) vs. a Democracy (which we aren’t).
If I could wave a magic wand and do one thing politically, it would probably be that.
the 17th amendment is not only “dumbass” but destroyed the way our system of government was set up...
dumbass seems appropriate
it did not work out because ONE state ONE time could not break a deadlock and send ONE senator to DC...
THAT was the reasoning for the 17th amendment...
it was a power grab by liberals ( yes we had liberals way back then ) and it worked...
our senators now answer to no one but a political party..
Simply nonsense. The Senate experiment broke early on in the 19th century. The 17th didn’t occur by magic or some evil leftist scheme, it was demanded by the people fed up with the institutional corruption of that body and the way its members were selected.
the 17th was not demanded by the people...
it was demanded because south carolina could not elect at that time a representative..
therefore, south carolina declared that they were taxed without representation..
and the aftermath of that was the 17th amendment...
an amendment that removed the stated from the federal government and gave that right to nationalist parties..
you, sir are either uneducated or a troll..
if you are uneducated, learn from this experience..

“but i have grown tired of seeing trolls win the day due to their constant rantings..”
—>Look who’s talking. Rather than present your argument logically, you go on bizarre tirades and engage in insults. I’ve posted throughout this thread on the subject at hand, for which you have ignored.
“here we go.. i got posting privilidges in 2004..”
—>I have been here since 1998. I have made almost 82,000 posts in my years here.
