I’ve watched this show a few times and it’s the same format everytime. Prof Beer Summit Gates traces some white persons ancestry and it always leads to their aancestor was a slave owner, then overwhelms that person into white guilt.

I guess some people aren’t proud of slave ownership. Go figure.

His descendants will want his lousy movies to be whitewashed from their history.

I have researched my ancestry in the past few months. They came from Germany in the early 1800’s and were mostly grain farmers until global warming caused a drought in Montana in 1934 and my grandfather moved to Oregon.

The amazing thing is that looking through the census data, the census forms asked as to whether the citizens could speak and write in English. My ancestors could. Most of the others that were immigrants could also. Looks like they came over here prepared to live in a free society and did their best to adapt to become Americans.

Something that shows you how our society has devolved.

Ben’s just trying to skip out on paying those reparations.

I’m not proud to write this, but my great grandfather owned Ben Affleck’s grandfather. He used him to pick cotton in Norway. My family owned a huge cotton plantation in Norway.

We have many songs that started in those cotton fields.

“Oh, the herring is a tricky fish
But he makes an awfully tasty dish
Lutefisk is stored in lye
Drain it off or else you’ll die
Do-Da, Do-Da”

Several blacks ought to approach Ben and ask what he tinks about Mike Brown.

On one side of my family, my ancestor tribesmen owned slaves. On the other side of my family, Buffalo Soldiers attacked my ancestor tribesmen. My family has stopped owning slaves. It’s a good bet that the descents of Buffalo Soldiers are still attacking people.

Mine owned slaves

Some just a few

Some a lot

I don’t apologize

No remorse

I don’t claim Affleck

I’d prefer to be related to anyone else

1/4 of my ancestors were Georgian slave owning plantation owners. I have no shame in that heritage whatsover.

“Judy Walkman,a professional genealogy
researcher in southern California, was doing
some personal work on her own family tree.
She discovered that Senator Harry Reid’s
great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for
horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in
1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this
common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows
him standing on the gallows in Montana territory:
On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her
research is this inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse
thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885,
escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six
times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted
and hanged in 1889.’

So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid
for information about their great-great uncle.

[NOTE: I assume she didn’t include any of this
information.]

Harry Reid: Believe it or not, Harry Reid’s staff
sent back the following biographical sketch for
her genealogy research:

“Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory .
His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable
equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana
railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of
his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume
his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player
in a vital investigation by the renowned Pinkerton Detective
Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important
civic function held in his honor when the platform upon
which he was standing collapsed.”

“Throughout most of my life, I raised tobacco. I want you to know that with my own hands, all of my life, I put it in the plant beds and transferred it. I’ve hoed it. I’ve chopped it. I’ve shredded it, spiked it, put it in the barn and stripped it and sold it.” — Al Gore, 1988

What a fairy. My great, great, great grandmother owned slaves. She was Carry A. Nation, and her dad emancipated the slaves they owned in Missouri after the war.

None of them left. They were family. He was paying them anyway, being a preacher. It took two more generations before they left.

Fascinating to read about. She wrote a book about her life, which comes in handy when you are trying to figure out what life was really like during and just after the Civil War.

The PBS show is a white-guilt show anyway. There are few about the unsavory history of other nationalities. Do you think they’d show Obama’s “interesting” roots?

I KNOW the late Patrick Swayze’s family owned slaves as a branch of my family was right there beside them in the area around Yazoo, Mississippi.
