Fast food workers in the city and around the country are walking off the job today to demand $15 an hour.
Protesters started lining up at the McDonalds on Flatbush Avenue and Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn early this morning.
It's the latest day of action organized by the Fight for $15 movement.
Many workers taking place in today's protest say that they work 40 hours a week and still don't make enough to cover their rent and the basic costs of living.
"Every month, I make two-thirds of my rent, and that's the only thing I can do, is pay my rent. I can't buy food, I can't buy toiletries, I can't treat my grandchildren to a day out," said one person at the protest. "It's very difficult."
"It's real difficult because I got to support a wife and four kids, and $8.75 just can't make it," said another. "We need $15, and we need a union to back us up in case if cost of living keep going up, transit going up, food going up, everything going up."
More protests are scheduled to take place later this afternoon. A march from Columbus Circle to Times Square is also planned for this evening, where thousands more are expected to join.
The group says tens of thousands of people will be demonstrating in more than 200 U.S. cities.
Demonstrations are scheduled in 40 other countries around the world.
or get married to someone who makes $8.75 an hour -
Did anyone even notice that they walked?
Well, if your skill set has you working the counter at McDonald's, get a paper route.
LOL
I'm trying to figure out why conservatives are slamming this guy so hard. He actually has a job and works, when he and his wife and his four kids could probably get more money on welfare, and he could sit around doing nothing all day. And he's bucking the system leftists created to make sure he's on welfare, and the inflation they created that screw guys like him. He's the victim of leftists. Why bash him, even of he isn't a professor of economics. He goes to work every day. Would you rather he sit around on the couch and cash checks all day?
When I worked in downtown Manhattan, they weren't a bad option. $5 got you a pretty decent meal compared to nearly double that for the privilege of being waited on by someone with an attitude at the local McDucks or $30 plus for a decent sit-down meal.
I have gotten some great food from carts.
Fire these jerks. It is not like there is a shortage of people looking for work! These fools don’t understand that they will lose far more than they gain at this artificial wage rate of $15 per hour. Besides this has the SEIU fingerprints all over this manufactured “crisis”. Note to businesses: AUTOMATE these idiot’s jobs out of existence.
I know a place you could get a pretty good $2 falafel.
This is why leftists win elections in places like New York. They will take a guy like this and divert his blame to the employer whereas conservatives will pile on with platitudes which, while they may be technically correct, do nothing to help this guy turn against his real exploiters here-- the left.
“Now they will gey ZERO dollars an hour.”
It’s SEIU...
The SOP is to get the job a few days to week before the “Protest”, then walk off the job to “show Solidarity”.
Same song, different verse.
Damn, maybe many of those kids that grow up thinking they're so much smarter than their parents are right!
Wouldn’t take too much to make McDonalds entirely automated using robots.
Can’t do any worse.
My only anger is reserved for SEIU who is using these dull minded(albeit employed) people to do their dirty work. SEIU is a hard left, terrorist organization.
SEIU is doing this coast to coast.
You really think that he doesn’t get any sort of government handout with a “wife and four kids to support” and he makes 8 bucks an hour?
This is what happens when you replace high school kids with adults at fast food restaurants.
This is not a career choice idiots.
It’s an entry level job.
God these people are slow.
