Gwyneth Paltrow is slashing her food budget to raise awareness about hunger. But sometimes even the best intentions are met with criticism, eye rolls and sarcasm.
Last week, the Oscar winner announced that she had accepted The Food Bank for New York City challenge to live on food stamps for one week, with a grocery budget of $29 or about $1.38 per meal.
According to the #FoodBankNYCChallenge, needy families are given $29 per person as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, after Congress cut food stamps twice since 2013.
Once Paltrow accepted the challenge, she tweeted a picture of her $29 in food choices brown rice, black beans, peas, eggs, tortillas, cilantro, limes and fresh vegetables.
But apparently the tweet left a bad taste, with many Twitter users eating the Iron Man star alive.
Vast difference living on food stamps for 1 week knowing youve a safety net of millions, and that being your life every day Gwyneth Paltrow, tweeted one person.

Happiness occurs between the ears.
These Hollyweird types think that just by doing something like this empathizes with people living on the edge. There was one actor a while back that slept on a subway grate for one night and said he now identified with the homeless. Then went on to have a steak dinner (I’m thinking one of the Sheen’s?)
Gwynenth Paltrow is one particularly clueless person, I am not sure why we should care about her pointless spewings anyway.
I’m sure she had good intentions. No reasonot to harangue her.
The current administration would love for the peasants to live on barely enough to eat on while they dine at the finest restaurants, drink the finest wines, and eat caviar...
She has become such a classless act that she is repulsive.
Martin Sheen actually kicked a homeless guy from his spot so he can be homeless for a night.
If this is what money does to your brain, I will be happy to die poor.
No excuse for Sheen. He adopted his stage name in honor of Bishop Fulton Sheen.
She’s trying to make up for her “cookbook” that required a small mortgage for each haute cuisine entree.

Also, the food stamp programs were expanded as part of the 2009 “throw money everywhere” budgets. Obama’s saying things are nearly all better now.
I know she expected a radically different effect and so was her message, but she indeed has proven that it is possible to eat for a week at $29.
My economics professor did a similar thing in college did a similar thing. He constructed a menu that would sustain a human for about $1 a day. The largest expense item was liver - for essential B vitamins. His point was this took care of needs. Everything else was wants. A good guy. He mocked Keynes and used ‘Capitalism and Freedom’ as one of the texts.
jeez you can fast for a week for less than $29, people do that you know.
Wait, so "supplemental" means the same as "entire" now?

In fact, those are good choices, in terms of food. The complaining might be partly motivated by the desire to make excuses for the way that welfare money is wasted.
There is a strong lobby which defends irresponsible behaviour, and ignores the need to recommend thrift and responsiblity to those who are living on the public purse. That is why they are angry with this actress - because in that pic, she shows that public money is a generous provision. If they just wanted to hate Gweneth P as an airhead, they could just ignore her.
Really?.
Unless my observations are way off (and I would like this to be the case) California EBT folks choose the wrong "foods" with their electronic foodstamps.
I seem to notice a preponderance of convenience foods, snack items and treats.
Vegetables? Not so much. Only if one counts tobacco (paid for in cash) and (ahem) fermented grain products (also paid for in cash).
.
Agreed. And I can't see where she did anyone any harm here.
Thats precisely what the left is so furious about - that photo of what she could buy with $29. She left out the essentials of any food stamp diet - cigarettes and bourbon.
