I am again buying a computer.
The VAIO with Win7 is dying after many years of faithful service.
I have some Acers in sight but cannot decide between the Win8.1 with 1TB SATA vs Beloved Win7 No SATA but instead a regular hard drive.
I just word-process and surf and store pics. Occasionally Skype.
I have Win8 on my teeny computer and I cannot say I particularly like it, some people say I can turn the 8 into a 7 look and feel. But is it really 7? Win7 can turn off cookies and do some things 8 cannot do.
Your input? Please?
TECH PING LIST PLEASE??
I don’t understand your question. A regular hard-drive is SATA.
And yes, I know that life would be better and more advanced on other operating systems.
That my legs would lengthen 6 inches, and my bust size increase with other specialty OS. That my hair would turn naturally blond, and all wrinkles would erase. That men would chase me and my bank account would hit 8 figures.
However I LIKE MS
Windows 8.1 can be configured to look/work like Windows 7 - NOT Windows 8.0.
Subtle difference but make sure you have 8.1 - upgrading from 8.0 is HARD.
Good luck!
How did you find a no SATA laptop?
I presume you’re talking about with SSD storage versus with a traditional hard drive.
The SSD is a great way to go for speed. But with respect to Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7, I would highly recommend you get a touch screen. You will not understand the benefits of Windows 8.1 without the touch screen.
And yes, in desktop mode, you can get a similar experience to Windows 7. And note that Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 and will have an even better desktop experience.
This will make Win 8.1 look like Win 7:

It’s free .... my tech source told me it should be the first download on a new PC after my old one crashed. It works great and I am not a “techie” sort of person.
Describe for me how your current laptop is dying. What does it do to make you think it is dying?
Given your skills and habits, get the cheap one.
SATA isn’t an advantage or disadvantage unless you are a gamer and these days we are on pure silicon.
Buy a refurbished business computer from the link below. I need one back during Christmas, the one they sent looked like new with a new battery, no scratches and the printing on the keyboard was like new
Save some money
And then there are serial attached SCSI drives SAS, but I believe the poster means flash storage vs SATA. Go flash (solid state) if available.
What is causing the confusion here is that any laptop new enough to have shipped with Win7 should have come with a SATA drive, but that is an assumption, and you know what they say about making assumptions. Solid State SSD SATA drives are faster than both non SSD SATA and IDE.
I would try to replace the drive in your existing WIN7 laptop with a new SSD drive (if indeed the existing interface is SATA), unless the system has other problems.
Take a deep breath and realize that there isn’t much difference between 8.1 and 7. The differences are only cosmetic.
I have computers running one or the other (and the work computers are STILL XP)
If you don’t want to use the tiles, click on the desktop and go there. I rarely bother with them myself.
90% of the programs you are going to regularly run are going to jump to the desktop anyway.
I’d go with the 1TB 8.1. It’s what I have. I have to tie it down to the table it’s so fast.
Well, if you are only using it to surf and do word processing, then the hard drive shouldn’t be much of an issue for you. You’re better off worrying about usability.
There are programs (like ClassicShell) that can give you a start menu and Windows 7 look in Windows 8, but it is only cosmetic. Everything “under the hood” is still all Windows 8 functionality.
I think you must mean one laptop has a SATA drive and the other has a SSD drive.
I has a Asus laptop with Win 7 - 64 bit and a SSD 256 gb drive, and I am pleased.
What is killing your laptop? If its just the drive, buy a small ssd from best buy etc pop it in and build a W10 system so you’ll be ahead of the curve when w7-8.1 get upgraded for free around September. Then you could buy a permanent system in October knowing exactly what you want. Another reason to wait is the next gen systems just being released are losing all ports other then USB 3.1. You won’t even have a power chord. So anything you buy in the next few months will be really cheap come September/oct.
