Question about Laptop Purchase Win8.1 with 1TB SATA vs Beloved Win7 No SATA??

I am again buying a computer.

The VAIO with Win7 is dying after many years of faithful service.

I have some Acers in sight but cannot decide between the Win8.1 with 1TB SATA vs Beloved Win7 No SATA but instead a regular hard drive.

I just word-process and surf and store pics. Occasionally Skype.

I have Win8 on my teeny computer and I cannot say I particularly like it, some people say I can turn the 8 into a 7 look and feel. But is it really 7? Win7 can turn off cookies and do some things 8 cannot do.

Your input? Please?

Go on CNET.com and research there. It is a good site.
tomshardware.com also helpful.

I recently put a 500 gig Samsung SATA SSD in my Toshiba laptop. Love it! Got it from newegg.com

I don’t understand your question. A regular hard-drive is SATA.

And yes, I know that life would be better and more advanced on other operating systems.

That my legs would lengthen 6 inches, and my bust size increase with other specialty OS. That my hair would turn naturally blond, and all wrinkles would erase. That men would chase me and my bank account would hit 8 figures.

However I LIKE MS

Windows 8.1 can be configured to look/work like Windows 7 - NOT Windows 8.0.

Subtle difference but make sure you have 8.1 - upgrading from 8.0 is HARD.

Good luck!

How did you find a no SATA laptop?

No SATA is the interface. You mean SSD.

Agreed. SSD as the boot drive is the only way to go anymore.

If it is windows 8.1 does it mean that the computer has to have a touchscreen? I hate touchscreens.

I presume you’re talking about with SSD storage versus with a traditional hard drive.

The SSD is a great way to go for speed. But with respect to Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7, I would highly recommend you get a touch screen. You will not understand the benefits of Windows 8.1 without the touch screen.

And yes, in desktop mode, you can get a similar experience to Windows 7. And note that Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 and will have an even better desktop experience.

So both of them are regular hard drives?

Oh.

Not at 500 dollars for the laptop it isn’t, evidently.

If it were me, I would get the win7. You can have the drive it comes with cloned onto any type or size of drive you want. Then either keep the original drive for a virgin backup or wipe it and use it for storage after you put it into an enclosure.

This will make Win 8.1 look like Win 7:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_classic_shell/

It’s free .... my tech source told me it should be the first download on a new PC after my old one crashed. It works great and I am not a “techie” sort of person.

Maybe 500Gb is all you need. How much disk space are you using now?
