The North Charleston police officer who fatally shot a 50-year-old man during a traffic stop on Saturday has been arrested and is being charged with murder.
North Charleston Patrolman First Class Michael Slager, 33, will face the charge in connection with the shooting death of Walter Scott.
That announcement came at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon from North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey who referred to a video someone recorded of the shooting Saturday morning.
The video had been sent to Scott's family and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division, Summey said.
"As a result of that video and bad decisions made by our officer, he will be charged with murder," Summey said.
"It's been a tragic day," North Charleston Police Chief Eddie Driggers said.
Driggers said the video shows Scott "taking off" and the officer shooting the suspect.
Summey called the video "very demonstrative" and said without the video, it would have been difficult to resolve the issue. Summey said the city is trying to meet with Scott's family and will reach out to them any way they can.

Looks like the “Gentle Giant” scenario in reverse. Twenty or more feet from the officer and retreating.
Shooting a suspect in the back fifty feet away is a “good shoot”?
At least they’re not just a Blue Wall of We’re Innocent.
So running begets shooting?
Nah. Back-shooting is all the rage these days.
Had one in Tacoma recently. Cop is back on duty.
If I’ve learned anything about these types of incidents I will wait for a lot more info to emerge before I make some sort of judgement about whether the cop was wrong or not.
.
If that were all there were to it, the cop would not be charged with murder.
Obviously, the cop caused the altercation, and the victim was only defending himself.
.
Looks like he tased, fought with and shot the wrong old man. Scott even had the taser and was going to use it on the cop...maybe could have used it to get his weapon. ...another episode of the untouchables.
The cop lied about the circumstances surrounding the shooting,
...
What’s your source for that claim?
That photo explains why the guy was running away...
obviously the cop was in fear for his life. /
Not sure of the circumstance but it was a "good shot"
If the guy was white, it would have been a good kill
I always ask myself if it was me, or Joe "Citizen" who did what the cop did, what would be the outcome....
I still think this was a "better shot"
No, the better and more pertinent question, is why in the hell a cop thinks that running away from a traffic stop for a non-working tail light is an executable offense?
I'm pro-law enforcement, but this is stupidity on the part of the cop and it is MURDER!
Period.
Have not watched the video....however....this incident was not over just because the driver/suspect began to run away.
Someone has to eventually capture said criminal....the one who tried to taser the officer per his article.
Stats also show a suspect who attacksnthe diisengages, reengages roughly 80% of the time.
This is additional info to chew on while reviewing the video.
Apparently the cop lied so much that the cops charged him with murder. Get it?
He probably “Turned and reached for his waistband”
That usually works
