...By the time Rick and Karen arrived at the Virginia Hospital Center, Erika was in a coma, in the ICU.
"...they basically told us that she was brain dead and that's it," Rick Langhart said, fighting back tears.
Hospital records cited the NuvaRing as a risk factor for Erika's multiple pulmonary embolisms. Records confirm what Erika's parents told CNN: that a blood clot started in an artery/vein in her right thigh and traveled to her lungs, causing "massive" pulmonary embolisms and "multiple episodes of cardiac arrest" on the way to the hospital and overnight.
The Langharts never heard their daughter's voice again. [big snip]
The NuvaRing dispenses what's called a third-generation progestin, or synthetic hormone. When it first came on the market, the device was touted as a breakthrough -- inserted vaginally to release a "continuous low dose of hormones." It stays in for three weeks, so no bother of taking a daily birth control pill. The ring was branded in a television commercial as "a different way to do birth control" and "Oh! It's easy to use."
Convenient? Absolutely. But safe?
...
Since the mid-1990s there have been multiple studies suggesting that while third-generation progestins are generally safe, they are approximately twice as likely to cause blood clots than older, second-generation birth control pills.

But the Langharts did not settle, insisting Merck be held accountable for what the family said was Merck's failure to properly warn users of the risk. They believe what Merck is getting away with is "criminal."
Instead, to honor Erika's memory, they decided to create a nonprofit to inform women of the dangers they believe are related to the NuvaRing and the comparative risks of all forms of hormonal contraceptives. The nonprofit's name, "Informed Choice for Amerika," honors their daughter's name.

Do read the whole thing. I had to snip out a lot because it's CNN.
If you know an y woman on NuvaRing birth control -- mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend --- please warn her that it could be life-threatening.
Life is all about choices.....
The lawsuit is about the manufacturer, Merck, not giving accurate info. to women about the relative risk of death from NuvaRing.
This is a good lawsuit, if it takes NuvaRing off the market.
Speaking of it, how are you doing with your recovery (from an unrelated illness)? Hope all is well.
How about honoring their child’s name by encouraging women to avoid poisoning their bodies with pharmaceuticals and to keep sex within the confines of marriage? what a culture of death we have created!
Nuva-RING? Bruce “Bernice” Jenner may find it useful in a few months.
Did you read my account of the --- vision, or whatever --- I had in the ICU?

Enjoy.
‘Two studies conducted in 2011 and 2012 reveal the risk of developing a serious blood clot among NuvaRing users is 11.4 and 8.3 per 10,000 women in a year, respectively. The NuvaRing’s label was updated in 2013 by the FDA with information about both studies.”
So at the higher end the risk is 0.14% of developing a blood clot.
EVERY package insert for any form of hormonal BC includes the warning about increased risk of thromboembolic disease. Every medicine is a trade off of effectiveness risk and side effects.
In addition, older women, overweight women and smokers all have increased risk of clots with hormone use. All of this spelled out in the package inserts for hormones.
All hormonal birth control brings an increased risk of blood clots.
That's what I'd call serious, especially since there are effective family planning methods that have zero risk.
As for the package insert warnings --- come on. Both the prescribing doctor and Merck have to do better than that.
Hormonal contraceptives ---- all of them, the OC, the patch, the injection, the vaginal insert or IUD --- harm women unnecessarily, and degrade the environment in ways we are just beginning to understand.
Assuming you're a man, maybe you would care more about the costs of hormonal contraceptives in the environment if you realized that they endanger your masculine primary and secondary sexual characteristics.
True --- and they all increase the hormonal contamination of every major watershed in America.
Even if you don't care so much about male minnows now having egg proteins in their testicles, I don't think that's what we really want to encourage? ---
Although feminizing American men would probably reduce some of the huge political-social problems associated with maleness per se, hey? A kind of population-wide gender disarmament? Obama would see the advantages...

Thank you for pointing out inconvenient truths.

Hormonal BC is the spawn of Satan.
Indeed, I did: click here. So very glad to see you back on the Forum in good form! Many blessings!
Thank you so much!
To God be all praise and glory!
