Ted Cruz's "Mushy Middle" Mistake (BARF ALERT!)
New York Post ^ | 04-03-2015 | George (Reagan can't Win) Will

Posted on 04/04/2015 6:48:34 AM PDT by parksstp

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was born in 1970, six years after events refuted a theory on which he is wagering his candidacy.

The 1964 theory was that many millions of conservatives abstained from voting because the GOP did not nominate sufficiently deep-dyed conservatives.

Well, There you go again George....

That's right George, go right to 1964 and conveniently leave out 1980 and 1984. 30 years later and you still refuse to admit that Reagan won the "mushy middle" (i.e Reagan Democrats) by presenting a conservative platform that you somehow try to denigrate and relate Reagan to a "moderate" by propping up Jeb Bush? Are you serious?

Obama is one of the most radical leftists to ever run for President. Yet I didn't hear leftists comparing him to George McGovern, in fact McGovern even admitted Obama was more leftist than him. Although he tries to deceive the electorate with his teleprompter-rhetoric, he doesn't really even attempt to hide his leftist policies anymore from the public.

So let me get this straight George. It's ok for the Democrats to nominate an Elizabeth Warren for President and that would be considered "moderate", yet Ted Cruz is a disaster waiting for 1964 to strike again?

You are so out of touch with mainstream America it's pathetic. I'd bank Cruz would do better than McCain or Romney in Berks and Bucks county. What's this rubbish about writing states off?

Cruz and Reagan before him are NOT writing off the mushy middle. Rather, they presented a clear distinct platform that was easily discernible from the alternative giving voters a clear choice. If you like leftist policies, vote for the Dems. If you want conservative policies vote for them. We've seen the last two elections when voters don't know where you stand will always choose the real thing over the imitation.

So the narrative by the establishment now is that Reagan was really a "moderate". Cue the Twilight Zone Music.

Left out 80, 84 true.

Left out 88, when people THOUGHT HW Bush was Reagan 3 (okay, it wasn’t true, but on election day, this was not widely known).

How about 94? VERY right wing campaign.
Ditto 2010.
Ditto 2014.

Meanwhile, doing it the Will way? 92,96,08, 12. Howzat working for ya georgie boi?

OMG! and then there’s this statement:

“Cruz sits in a Senate that has no Republicans akin to the liberals Goldwater served with”

Susan Collins
John McCain
Lindsey Graham
Mitch McConnell
Lisa Murkowski
Orin Hatch

etc...

Today, however, there is no need to nominate Cruz in order to make the GOP conservative.

Really George you need to get out of DC a little bit more. The bubble you live in is keeping you in complete isolation. Damn, we always talk about the liberal kool-aid. I guess there’s a new RINO flavor too.

The David Brooks/George Will school of Conservatism: pro-abortion, pro-homosexual marriage, pro-big government, pro-open borders, anti-constitution, anti-balanced budget, anti-Israel, anti-Christian.

You know: that kind of Conservative.

My question is since it is getting increasing hard to tell, who fears Cruz the most Democrats or Rino’s?

CRUZ 2016! The Progressive Liberal Democrat/Rino Communists have built a wall of communist elitism around the Washington seats of government with tentacles reaching far and deep into our Free Republic, with confidence, integrity, and all the attributes of a true and solid leader Cruz is demanding...Tear Down This Wall!

You can see, hear, touch, taste and smell the FEAR.

So the GOPe can remember 1964 when the nominated a strong Conservative and lost big, but they don't remember 1976, 1992, 1996, 2008, and 2012 when they nominated the "safe" candidate and lost big. Meanwhile, they don't remember 1980 when they oopsed and nominated a strong Conservative and won bigger than ever before or since except for 1984 (which they also forget) when they nominated a strong conservative and won in the biggest landslide ever.

Selective memory syndrome anyone?

Ted Cruz is THE stand out candidate.

So George Will compares Cruz’ campaign to Goldwater in ‘64. Sorry, but the Cruz campaign will be more similar to Reagan’s campaign. George Will wants to stay on the cocktail circuit along the beltway; he calls himself conservative while he is the classic RINO.

The 1964 theory ...

Somehow Will forgets the 1980/1984 theory.

The author fails to understand that there is no longer a “middle”. The candidate that motivates and turns out their base will be the one who wins elections.

I think there’s another reason Ted Cruz is a better candidate than the media thinks.

First, liberalism itself, certainly liberal governance under Barack Obama, has been exposed as wrong, among precisely the ones who are apolitical, surface watchers of the political scene-low information voters, the young in general, and some independents. Not all who have voted for Barack Obama in the last two presidential elections are dyed-in-the-wool liberals.

Significant portions of traditional Democrat voting blocs-jews, blacks, hispanics, and to an extent women voters, have also expressed disillusionment with the Democratic Party. Given the current malaise, any conservative, including Ted Cruz, is a bit more difficult to demonize, and given mass dissatisfaction among the electorate, will get a hearing.

Ted Cruz has the ability, with his calm, unique way of presenting conservatism, to change minds that are already a bit susceptible to adopting beliefs they might never have considered before.

Secondly, Ted Cruz isn’t slick. Because he has the certitude of his convictions, he doesn’t need to be slick. Ask a question, get an answer. This contrasts refreshingly with most liberal and conservative pols. I believe many Americans are, perhaps even if only subconsciously, craving a straight shooter. Ted Cruz seems incapable of anything but shooting straight with people, and this will carry some weight moving forward.

What the media-bots see as his greatest weakness, may be his greatest strength.

George Washington could not have won the 1964 election, which was all about JFK having just been assassinated and the media turning him into a Camelot knight and our national self image.
