"The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" is a song by American songwriter Jimmy Webb. It has become a much-recorded standard, without ever having charted as a single. Webb was inspired by the 1966 science fiction novel The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein my all-time personal favorite author who wrote extensively about space exploration, cloning, genetic longevity and time travel, originating the concept that "a paradox can be paradoctored". Heinlein was known as "the Dean of science fiction" and will long stand among the giants of the genre. During the televised Apollo 11 moon landing on 20 July 1969, Mr. Heinlein sat next to Walter Cronkite as a special technical advisor for the broadcast.

The novel that inspired this song introduced the slogan TANSTAAFL (Tan-Staff-el), short for "There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch", a motto FReepers often embrace. In a 2009 interview Jimmy Webb talked about the influence of Robert Heinlein and the song's title:

"Robert Heinlein, was a kind of early mentor of mine. I started reading his books when I was eight years old. ... I guess I was really getting more of my education out of science-fiction than out of public school. I was reading Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov and learning a great deal about the patois of the language itself and how these words were being used to create emotions. I was learning this from writers without even knowing it. ... "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" was one of the best titles I've ever heard in my life. I really am guilty of appropriating something from another writer. In this case I had contact with Robert A. Heinlein's attorneys. I said, 'I want to write a song with the title, "The Moon is A Harsh Mistress". Can you ask Mr. Heinlein if it's okay with him?' They called me back and he said he had no objection to it."
The haunting song is especially associated with Glen Campbell, who performed it on his farewell tour. Other versions include Joe Cocker, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Michael Feinstein. Webb recorded the song twice, in 1977 for his El Mirage album, and again in 1996 for his Ten Easy Pieces album.

Orquesta Ceiba - Abuelita, ( Grandmother, [ The "ita" added to the word "Abuela" has a loving, affectionate connotation. This is the closest I could come to a song about Easter in Salsa, which is actually not a Salsa but a Guaguanco. The idea that this is LUV W's anniversary and that she spoils her grandchildren absolutely rotten then maybe it is fitting! ] )

It's called a "reunion tour" punct. Carmine Appice, Tim Bogert and Vince Martell are apparently still on speaking terms. The Fudge broke up in March of 1970 with Tim and Carmine going to Cactus and then to Beck, Bogert & Appice in 1972. In 1982, Fudge reunited without Vince Martell to tour promoting the release of "Best Of". That resulted in an album of fresh material in 1984 for the album "Mystery". Ron "Jango" Mancuso (Left For Dead, Warrant, Jake E. Lee, Red Dragon Cartel; Beggars and Thieves) played guitar along with Jeff Beck, who guested under the moniker "J. Toad". Two Fudge reunion tours followed in 1987 & 1988 with Paul Hanson on guitar. Lanny Cordola replaced Hanson in 1988 and then they went their separate ways again.

In 1991 Appice revived the Vanilla Fudge name for a tour with Ted Nugent's former band members Derek St. Holmes (guitar, vocals), Martin Gerschwitz (keyboards, vocals) and Tom Croucier (bass, vocals), which resulted in the album "The Best of Vanilla Fudge Live".

Three of the originals (Appice, Bogert, and Martell) reunited in 1999 with vocalist/organist Bill Pascali replacing Mark Stein to record the greatest hits album, "Vanilla Fudge 2001/ The Return / Then And Now". In 2002 Pete Bremy and later T.M. Stevens subbed on bass for Tim Bogert (who was too ill to tour) and in 2003 they released a live album, "The Real Deal – Vanilla Fudge Live", recorded on tour in 1987 with Paul Hanson on guitar. Martell overdubbed guitar and vocals later. In 2003–2005, the group toured with Teddy Rondinelli standing in on guitar for Martell.

In 2005, all four original members of Vanilla Fudge reunited for a tour with members of The Doors (touring as Riders On The Storm) with Steppenwolf and in some areas The Yardbirds. Pascali returned in place of Stein for some 2005 and 2006 shows before leaving to join the New Rascals. On October 15, 2006, Vanilla Fudge was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and all four originals showed up.

HBO's final episode of The Sopranos in 2007 featured a remake of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (with Pascali on lead vocals) as a theme for the cliff hanger. The band also went back into the studio to record "Out Through the In Door," a Led Zeppelin cover album released in 2007 only in Europe. Also, the band (Stein & Martell with Steve Argy on bass and Jimmyjack Tamburo on drums) performed "You Keep Me Hangin' On" for a PBS fundraising pledge drive in early 2008.

In March 2008 the original lineup of Vanilla Fudge embarked on a tour of the US (mostly in New England). But in the summer of that year, Bogert and Appice left to tour with Cactus, which they had reformed in 2006. Stein and Martell continued on in 2008 and 2009 as "Mark Stein and Vince Martell of Vanilla Fudge" for a tour with Jimmyjack Tamburo on drums and Pete Bremy returning on bass. "Out Through the In Door" was released in the US in 2008 and Stein and Martell performed shows during that period with Steve Argy and Jimmyjack Tamburo again as the rhythm section.

In the spring of 2011, Vanilla Fudge embarked on what was announced as their "farewell tour". That lineup was: Carmine Appice, Mark Stein, Vince Martell and Pete Bremy. On March 29, 2011, the band appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and performed "You Keep Me Hangin' On." That lineup continued to tour throughout 2011 and again in 2012 supporting The Yardbirds.

As of 2014, Vanilla Fudge is still performing concerts regularly - somewhere, with someone. The name's a money-maker, but you can't tell the players without a program.

Thank you for that lengthy explanation. I had known that Appice was still around. He wrote a book on how to play the drums which I had read many, many moons ago. I did not know that other members of the group were still getting together.

Because of my piano/organ background, I used to play, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” over and over again. My then wife thought that I was playing the song about her which almost led to a divorce. I had to reassure her that I was simply jammin’ to the organ. ROFL Crazy woman!

Try "Chest Fever" instead - that should drive her nuts. When the Band recorded it, they had no lyrics, so Robbie Robertson scribbled some nonsense for Levon Helm, the take was too good to tinker with and the rest is jabberwocky history. Robertson's said, "I'm not sure that I know the words to 'Chest Fever'; I'm not even so sure there are words to 'Chest Fever'." He has also stated the entirety of the song does not make sense. Garth Hudson's organ on it is pure genius purportedly based on Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. It may just be Levon's fat beat, Garth's "Church up in here" Hammond, but I absolutely rock out to "Chest Fever".

I know she’s a tracker, any scarlet would back her
They say she’s a chooser, but I just can’t refuse her
She was just there, but then she can’t be here no more
And as my mind unweaves, I feel the freeze down in my knees
But just before she leaves, she receives

She’s been down in the dunes and she’s dealt with the goons
Now she drinks from the bitter cup, I’m trying to get her to give it up
She was just here, I fear she can’t be here no more
And as my mind unweaves, I feel the freeze down in my knees
But just before she leaves, she receives

It’s long, long when she’s gone, I get weary holding on
Now I’m coldly fading fast, I don’t think I’m gonna last
Very much longer

“She’s stoned” said the Swede, and the moon calf agreed
I’m like a viper in shock with my eyes in the clock
She was just there somewhere and here I am again
And as my mind unweaves, I feel the freeze down in my knees
But just before she leaves, she receives
