INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Governor Mike Pence has signed the state's amended Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
After hours of discussion Thursday, the Indiana House of Representatives passed a revised version of the controversial bill 66-30. The Indiana Senate approved the new version late Thursday afternoon.
"The freedom of religion for every Hoosier is enshrined in the Constitution of the United States and in the Indiana Constitution, which reads, 'No law shall, in any case whatever, control the free exercise and enjoyment of religious opinions, or interfere with the rights of conscience.' For generations, these protections have served as a bulwark of religious liberty for Hoosiers and remain a foundation of religious liberty in the State of Indiana, and that will not change," Gov. Pence said in a statement.
"Last week the Indiana General Assembly passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act raising the judicial standard that would be used when government action intrudes upon the religious liberty of Hoosiers, and I was pleased to sign it. Over the past week this law has become a subject of great misunderstanding and controversy across our state and nation. However we got here, we are where we are, and it is important that our state take action to address the concerns that have been raised and move forward," Pence added.
The revised bill does not include making the LGBT community a protected class. The move, however, lays a foundation for that debate in the Indiana State Legislature.
"What was intended as a message of inclusion of all religious beliefs was interpreted as a message of exclusion, especially for the LGBT community," said House Speaker Brian Bosma earlier Thursday. "Nothing could have been further from the truth, but it was clear that the perception had to be addressed.

Bless his heart.
Don’t even think of running for president Mike Pence.
And the LBGT folks will all sing kumbayah now?
What was it granny taught..”give them and inch, they will ask for a mile.”

If he wanted to be president, he can forget about it now. The last thing this country needs right now is another spineless wimp.
Hard to become president if you only win 1.8% of the vote.
RFRA does not necessarily protect Christians who refuse to service gay weddings.
It depends on the judge who presides the case.
New Mexico has RFRA. That did not protect the photographer who refused to service a gay wedding.
Not good, Mike. The wedding cake for gay marriage isn’t covered. That’s the whole problem in the first place.
It’s purely symbolic gay bashing, not the real, substantive gay bashing America deserves.
RE: Hard to become president if you only win 1.8% of the vote.
I don’t think Mike Pence has shown any inclination of running for President at all. It’s the pundits who are proposing that he run.
I have gays all around me....not too close but still....I love them....but I hate the group they belong too...I won’t participate in their party...
The way the ‘RAT girlymen have the GOP sissies on the run makes me think that maybe there is something to that homophobia BS. The GOP is scared to death of the boys who run funny.
>>>give them and inch, they will ask for a mile<<<
It’s over. This is just another piece of proof. Everything is rotten. The decay is set in. Even if somebody conservative like Cruz wins the next election it matters not. My generation (X) is much more degenerate than the booomers. And the Millenials even more so.
This story illustrates that Christians are too wimpy to stand up for themselves. Slowly as the older generation dies off and is replaced by the younger generation that indulges in all sorts of perversion unthinkable to the generation of the past, the country will sink deeper and deeper into the abyss.
I suggest we just make things as nice as possible and enjoy the decline as much as we can.
As for Christians, I suggest they collectively grow a pair and fight back. But they do not. And lose inch by inch each year.
What is it with these spineless wussies - Pence and Hutchinson?
Puk-puk-puk-pukKAW!
Much ado about absolutely nothing...and Gov. Pence handled the Sunday shows VERY poorly.
Very upset about Indiana’s amended RFRA. It would have been far better to have no RFRA than to turn the Religious Freedom Restoration Act into the Religious Persecution Enabling Act which enables Homosexual Activists to target Christian small business owners for destruction. To do this on Easter weekend is a betrayal of biblical proportions with the Corporate wing the Homosexual Activists playing the part of the Sadducees, the Country Club wing of the GOP playing the part of Judas, Gov. Pence playing the part of Pontius Pilot, and the media playing the part of the angry mob crying for blood.
Oooh. That’s gonna leave a mark.
