I don’t get it. Are people now required to stay in relationships with crazy people just in case leaving them causes a meltdown where they kill hundreds? I can get some of self-blame but it’s not rational and she hopefully will get past it soon. But other people blaming her? Come on!

The blame is probably more because of stories like these

'I'm planning a heinous act that will be remembered forever': Pilot's ex-GF says he shared prophecy

and the connected idea that she knew that he was planning this "heinous act" but didn't tell anyone.

From your link:

She said: ‘When I heard about the crash, there was just a tape playing in my head of what he said: “One day I will do something that will change the system and everyone will then know my name and remember me”. ‘I did not know what he meant by that at the time, but now it’s clear.’

If this is what made the neighbors get out pitchforks and torches, well, sorry but I don't see it. Nothing here implied he will kill hundreds. You cannot even imagine such a thing unless you think the person you are talking to is completely unhinged. But she says it was a year before she left him so she didn't know/think that at the time I have to assume. And doimg something that will change the system doesnt seem very specific at all. Perhaps she thought he had dreams of being the best pilot, or inventing some idea. Fly into a mountain? Last thing I'd assume. She's getting a bum rap, in my opinion.
