GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is getting a big polling bump after his announcement that he will seek his party's nomination, Public Policy Polling reports.

Support for the first-term Texas senator, who opened his national campaign office in Houston on Tuesday, rose from 5 percent to 16 percent, PPP noted, pushing Cruz into the top-tier of Republicans who will likely make a primary run.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is leading the pack, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and then Cruz, whose popularity with conservatives in his party is growing, PPP said of its latest survey of likely GOP primary contenders. Bush and Walker narrowly lead polling in New Hampshire, one of the early primary states, according to a Suffolk University poll reported last week by The Wall Street Journal.

Others in the PPP survey include Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who ties retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson with 10 percent, followed by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 6 percent apiece. Rounding out the bottom are New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with 4 percent and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 3 percent.

PPP noted of Cruz's gains in a release Wednesday: "Cruz has really caught fire with voters identifying themselves as 'very conservative' since his announcement....

I’m not a Carson supporter, but he’s an impressive man, has an impressive life story. I don’t think there’s any of the “look at us we’re not racists” thing at all. That’s a liberal attraction.....

It is my belief that the real power brokers of the world have a system, a method to their madness so to speak.

These are the rules:

Only Republicans are allowed to raise taxes
Only Democrats are allowed to cut social programs
Only Democrats are allowed to start wars
Only Republicans are allowed to end wars
Only a black president would be allowed to push gay rights
and..
Only a Hispanic will be allowed to fix the immigration issue.

It's just a pattern I have noticed.

Well, for some of them it’s a given that they are going to enter, and then get discouraged and drop out.

Good, let the Hucksters and Jebbies stay home.

Then again ? If Huck stays out he could bring in the evangelical support for Ted Cruz.

Only his pride will cause him to enter.

Yep, I agree. Cruz made a smart play for the Hucksters base of support with the way he made his announcement.

Very smart, brilliant actually.

Do you honestly think a white MD with the same credentials and life story would be taken seriously by anyone as a presidential candidate? The only reason he got any attention in the first place is because he was a black doctor opposing Obamacare. It’s an old pattern of a certain element within the GOP (and here on FR) who so badly want a black conservative to support that they elevate lightweights or RINOs because, well, that’s all the GOP has. Colin Powell, Condi Rice (RINOs), J.C. Watts, Herman Cain, and now Carson. It’s the conservative version of affirmative action, as confirmation that they aren’t racist, which is why I coined the term confirmative action.

Look you can be bitter about that if you want.

But Carson’s race is a part of his story. It was a handicap when he was young, but he over came it......but not by liberalism like preferences - but by EXCELLENCE. So to say that Carson’s race is only important because of white guilt or whatever is just absurd.

But again, resent his popularity if it makes you feel better about yourself.

I’m not bitter, just realistic. It has nothing to do with Carson personally. I said the same thing back in 2000 when a some here were suggesting J.C. Watts as a serious contender. Still, that 10% for Carson would be better served supporting Cruz or Walker.

Carson is a nice man, but frankly he is out of his league, he needs to run for state wide office and win before considering a run for the presidency.

P.S. I feel just fine about myself, and I don’t resent anyone. No need to make things personal, I don’t.

True.. my designer is Armouri’...

SO.... you’re saying having a wife(Cruz) thats an investment banker ex-member of Goldman-Sax and member of the CFR has nothing at all to DO WITH IT?..

that SHE’s just a house wife of some rube from Texas..
with two beautiful daughters.. and a latin surnane..
A perfect foil to fool the (foolish) republicans AGAIN?..

is that what you’re saying?.. If so, you could be right..

I’m waiting for Cruz to be VETTED... And his wife..
May not happen; since ALL seem to be convinced he is what he says he is..

I’m NOT.. but then I KNEW.. George Bush Jr. was poseur, a shill for democrats from the beginning..
And warned of him.. especially because “SLATE” selected him..

Bill Whittle or Ben Shapiro maybe.. even Palin.. but Cruz seems to be too convenient for me..
I’m open he is real BUT am also open he is a SHILL.. like Romney..

I’m hoping Rand Paul and Marco Rubio decided not to run. We need them in the Senate.

I think we are going to see that the other candidates will not take strong stands and say whats on their mind like Cruz will. People want a strong leader. That’s Ted Cruz.

I agree that 10% will be better spent on someone else, Cruz Walker in that order IMO too - but it’s still just not true to say it’s only because he’s black. I don’t care what the dynamic was with Watts or Cain - three different men - three different stories.
