(CNN)Gov. Mike Pence pledged Tuesday to "fix" Indiana's controversial religious freedom law to clarify that it does not allow discrimination against gays and lesbians.
But he insisted the problem isn't the law itself but how it's being perceived, saying a fix is needed only because of "frankly, the smear that's been leveled against this law." And he said the fix won't involve statewide anti-discrimination protections for LGBT Hoosiers.
The first-term Republican governor sought to tamp down the backlash Indiana has faced since he signed the law -- which its in-state supporters had claimed would allow businesses to turn away LGBT customers -- last week. He said he's asking state lawmakers to send him a followup measure before this week's end to ensure that's not the case.
"It would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear that this law does not give businesses a right to deny services to anyone," Pence said in a press conference in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

How can you lose respect when that ship done sailed?
Heavens no?? Not only is he naïve enough to not expect the gay hissy-fit, but he expresses himself in language you’d expect from an elderly female character on Murder, She Wrote?
This guy is an absolute train wreck!
It’s like the big D word is the Unpardonable Act or something. But it has been misused and abused, the same way murder of unborns is euphemized to Choice.
There are bad uses of Discrimination. But that does not mean there are no good uses. This is not about pettiness or vendettas. This is about being able to carry on a livelihood without being gotcha’d into sinful acts.
The left would not win this way if it were not permitted to win this way.
Nope.
Oh heavens he is not macho enough for you.
Go to some macho website if you want macho.
:(
There is a theoretical hope here and of course we ought to be praying mightily for it.
Who can connect on a personal level with Pence to help walk him successfully through the challenge in spite of his current stumbles, however? That would be the real key. It’s easy enough to condemn. However that is the old circular firing squad in action.
Mike Pence- Non Presidential.

its why I stand with Cruz
No. As the Mayor posted yesterday, we are saved by God’s grace
and love. Cowardice in the face of evil is nothing to write home about, either.
He blinked. And I am really sorry that Ted Cruz supported him. Hope by doing so it doesn’t make him look weak or bad.
Our candidates need to have more conviction and stick by what they say! This has been an ongoing problem!
The True Intent Of Indianas Religious Freedom Bill, According To The People Who Helped Write It
http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2015/03/31/3640801/conservatives-indiana-discrimination/
At the forefront of the conservative reaction is Micah Clark, who serves as executive director of the American Family Association of Indiana and who stood right behind Pence as he signed the bill. Speaking Monday to Tim Wildmon, head of the national American Family Association, Clark explained that conservatives should oppose any effort to clarify that the law does not legalize discrimination. That could totally destroy this bill, he explained.
Clark has been publicly advocating for the bill as a means for allowing anti-LGBT discrimination since December, long before the legislation was even drafted. This directly contradicts the claims made Monday by House Speaker Brian Bosma (R) and Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R) that the legislation never had anything to do with discrimination.
Eric Miller, Executive Director of Advance America, is another anti-LGBT activist who stood by Pence as he signed the bill. Advance America praised Pence for signing the bill last week, openly stating that it would allow wedding vendors to refuse to serve same-sex couples and allow Christian businesses to refuse transgender people access to restrooms. Miller was quoted as saying, It is vitally important to protect religious freedom in Indiana. Its the right thing to do. It was therefore important to pass Senate Bill 101 in 2015 in order to help protect churches, Christian businesses and individuals from those who want to punish them because of their Biblical beliefs! Pence and Miller, it turns out, go way back.
The whole story has not played out yet, and you are acting as though it had (and you sounded like you were denying grace in your previous comment too).
How many “Christians,” the moment something goes wrong with a brother, yank that grace-down-a-toilet lever with utmost vigor?
Typical GOP pol. Nothing to see here. We act like this nonsense is some sort of surprise. No, this IS the GOP. Precisely why they must be stopped at all costs.
If you are depending on externals you have already lost.
Even the cost of Democrats under Satan Forevermore?
Huh, talk about cutting off noses to spite faces!
He must be an idiot.
I used to think he had some qualities for higher office.
Not any more.
