Adam Smith, the former medical-device executive whose career was ruined when a video of him berating a Chick-Fil-A employee for the companys anti-gay stance went viral, said his family is now homeless and living on food stamps.
Mr. Smith, 37, who was the CFO of an Arizona-based catheter manufacturer, toldABCs 20/20 he was fired after recording an exchange between himself and a drive-thru cashier in June 2012, as the fast-food chain was embroiled in a national controversy over company President Dan Cathys public opposition to gay marriage.

Yeah....that's the brilliant thing to do. Take your discussion right to the top with a minimum-wage employee at the bottom of the food chain.
I sometimes joke around with the drive-thru people here but it's all friendly stuff.
Example: a couple days ago I was getting iced tea with my order and requested "UN-sweetened". I'm in the South where it ain't tea if it's not sweet. When she told me they were out of unsweetened tea, I asked her to just give me sweetened tea and throw in a couple packets of "unsweetener". The poor child believed me and asked her manager if they had any in stock.
People should cheer the misfortune of this bigot.
Jesus didn't seem to lose any sleep over the misfortunes of those money changing operations that he shut down.
Don’t you dare ever think you can speak for me, hypocrite.
If you don’t like what you read, leave Free Republic.
Reading his posting history, he appears to be a liberal.
That is the same guy in the original “protest” video? Doesn’t look the same guy?
When did I ever say I can speak for you, or anyone else? I gave my opinion, and my opinion alone.
Your words, not mine.
In hindsight maybe i should have just gotten a chicken sandwich?
Yeah, that's what good people do when bad people receive their comeuppance. Shocking, isn't it?
Now quit your hand-wringing and go make us some sandwiches.
Why shouldn’t he lose his job?
He brought disrepute to his company, just like he was attempting to do with Chic-Fil-A.
If losing his job as a CFO is a “death penalty” for him, then it goes to show the man has far deeper problems than is evidenced from his unsolicited, unprovoked and completely unwarranted attack on the employee who did nothing to him.
Chick-fil-A should offer him a job. Heap ashes on his head.
It’s one thing to lose his job - he brought disrepute to his company, yes, and probably deserved to lose his job.
It’s another thing to lose his job and essentially be blacklisted from other jobs. He apparently got other jobs/job offers that he lost when his prospective employers found out about the video. That’s one problem with the internet - because things stay around forever and can be circulated much more widely than before, it can be much harder for someone to recover from a mistake now than it has been in the past.
With 3 of every 20 of Americans covered by food stamps, it’s hard to turn around without bumping into someone using them.
That’s a nice base of voters for Democrats to work with.
Most people don’t seem to understand that.
He could save some money by not dyeing his hair and beard
She handled his outburst with poise and grace. She never saw the surprise attack coming, but sought to diffuse the situation in a calm manner once he launched into that emotional tirade. I wonder if other areas of his life were unstable, mental condition, or just pressure.
Perhaps she is better suited for the executive career path than he.
Anti-gay stance? Supporting marriage between a man and a woman is not anti-gay, it is pro-tradition.
I suspect that has more to do with him not being able to find a job than anything. Well, that and picking on some poor young lady who happens to look like Miss clean cut American apple pie. He thought he was going to be a hero, instead he shows what a jerk he is for picking on a little girl. Who wants to hire someone like that?
A person smart enough to be a CFO should have known that.
