In an interview with the UK Daily Telegraph this week, actor Sean Penn explained that he watches beheading videos made by the Islamic terrorist group ISIS in order to see and understand real violence.
The problem is we are not seeing enough of real violence, Penn told the paper. We are being anesthetized when you dont see the horror of war. In the Sixties, we grew up with the horror of Vietnam on our television screens every day. Today we have become anesthetized. The American news channels did this with the Iraq war; they wouldnt show what it was about, they wouldnt show the caskets coming home.
Of the ISIS videos, Penn added: Uh huh, Ive watched them. And anyone who sees them and claims that they were anesthetized by violent movies, that they werent horrified by what they saw, on the most primal level, is intellectually dishonest or existentially unpresent.
Penn, currently starring in Pierre Morels geriaction movie The Gunman, also told the Telegraph that, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, he had no gripes with Clint Eastwoods Iraq war film American Sniper.
Penn drew a parallel between Sniper and the anti-war films The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now, saying that audiences will invariably become stimulated by them.
Is that an argument against Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter? Not to me, Penn said. People will react to films in different ways. Some moron with a gun might watch Taxi Driver and think he should shoot a politician. I think puritanism is the source of the problem. Nobody glorified violence like John Wayne, and they dont pick on that stuff.

I’m looking forward to the day when Sean Penn is existentially unpresent.
WEll that should educate him.
I agree with Sean Penn (did I really write that?) for once. American news outlets do sanitize the news, especially Muslim terrorism. None show actual beheadings. They showed the people jumping out of buildings and hitting the ground on 911, but won’t now. Compare it to BBC news sometime, you’ll see the difference.
Those weren't examples of true communism. Those were all failed communism.
True communism will be next time and it will be perfect.
His girlfriend better be very afraid.
Sean pen problem is that he does not understand the nature of evil and that he thinks he is smarter then he actually is. I personally see him as a will meaning fool who only makes maters worse when he try’s to give his input on a problem.
If it is not real Communism then why are American Commies afraid to denounce it just as muslims don’t denounce the Islamonazis?
There is plenty of evidence of Commies in the West supporting the ‘not real Communism’ Communists at every turn.
Why don’t they go to one of the Communist hellholes and push for ‘reform Communism’? Why are they so adamant in turning the US Communist?
I refuse to use the sarcasm tag. If the intended sarcasm isn’t obvious in my post, I just have to live with that.
He watches. Over and over and over. It’s voyeurism.
Spicoli tries to buy a clue.
Sean Penn is one sick puppy.
Why don’t we make him the Ambassador to the Islamic State? That would give him the opportunity to try to talk them out of their barbaric ways.
I’ve seen those uber Commies who swear just that, we have never seen “true” Communism and deny that anything that’s ever been tried was Communist going to far to claim that there are NO Communists. Of course they still SUPPORT all of those non-Communist regimes and denounce American ‘capitalism’ (frankly they just denounce America).
It may not reflect your view (and I didn’t think that it did) but it is very much a view of the hard Left.
Then there are those on the Left who will admit (in certain audiences) that they supported Stalin’s purge of millions. Have to break some eggs.
Since Sean thinks that Americans were spared body bags in Iraq in an effort to drum up support for the war, perhaps he and Fat Mike Moore can ‘splain about the war crimes committed by their ‘freedom fighters’ in Al Qaeda/ISIS.
Maybe he could volunteer for ISIS training cuttings.
Don’t like his leftism in fact he’s one of the worst, but I read just as far as the excerpt and didn’t find anything objectionable. Unless I’m wrong, that’s because he’s trying to defend a violent movie with a lot of gun action?
I don’t think he’s a very good actor but he was perfectly cast as a skeevy lawyer in Carlito’s Way.
Lol. I got it even if nobody else did.
Not being married any more probably helps.
Was he eating Cheesies? (You know the rest of the joke).
