I think Cruz will be able to garner a significant number of Hispanic voters, of all I know about Cruz I don’t know if he speaks Spanish, I’ve always just assumed he does.

I’ve read that Cruz does not speak Spanish. (Unfortunate; it would be helpful if he did.)

He does not speak it fluently.

But he got 40% of the Latino vote when he ran for office in Texas.

He should get near 50% of the US Citizen Latino vote in 2016 as long as illegals are not given amnesty and then registered to vote.

I doubt you’ll ever hear Sen. Cruz going out of his way to speak Spanish in a mainstream forum (maybe on Spanish radio ads).

Sen. Cruz goes out of his way not to run as a minority candidate. He might be able to play that for votes, but that crosses his line. The media doesn’t want to give him an advantage either, so they won’t mention it.

Mentioned or not, If he’s the nominee, there’ll be a segment of voters turning out to vote for the “first Hispanic Presidential nominee”. That will bump his numbers in the Hispanic vote. Once you get to the general election, things like “he’s like me” matter as much as ideology.

This is why the media dare not focus on his race. And he won’t either, out of principle. But. It’s impossible to hide, and it will affect the outcome.

Like many of us Texans, he has stated that he is not very good at conversational Spanish but only knows some phrases and words.
