Half-Japanese and half African-American, Miss Nagasaki Ariana Miyamoto is the first-ever mixed-race Miss Universe Japan.
But changing perceptions here can be an uphill struggle. In a culture that typically prefers pale -- where "pure Japanese" white skin is considered a symbol of beauty -- the darker skinned Miyamoto's crowning last week was a revolution on the runway.

Not really. I have had very few instances of “racism” over the last 16 years here. My kids (who are “half”), none. Nice people are nice people, as arseholes are arseholes all over the world. This is wonderful and exceedingly fun place to live. The Japanese do tend to be more “racist” towards non-Japanese in a general sense, because of xenophobia and ignorance, not because of any cultural or inherent racism. The great thing about living here, is that the society is so homogenous and there are no culture wars or cultural ghettos. Crime is almost non-existent, and the food, heavy metal scene, hot chicks, ability to drink on the street 24 hours a day in front the cops, the “your business is not my business” of the Japanese - it all adds up to a damned good way to live. Speaking Japanese makes it even all the more fun and daily challenge to boot. Its awesome to live in a country other than your home country and look at things from outside too.

The most gorgeous black women on the planet are in the Philippines.
Not everybody knows or understands this, but the Japanese are some of the biggest racists in the world. If you are not 100% Nipponese, then you are Gaijin, or an “outsider barbarian.”

The girl is pretty. But she doesn’t look Japanese at all; not even Asian.
As the proud father of four such children I would obviously concur. If you’re a pink-faced Irishman nothing improves your family’s genes like an Asian wife.
Um, I’m part Irish, father side. There are also those Irish who aren’t “pink-faced”. Typically, some have black hair and blue eyes, and a more olive or white-ish complexion than “pink” - very attractive.
Though agree that often a mixed genes of two ‘extremes’ can produce beautiful offspring.
She’s “blasian”. Pretty girl. There are some gorgeous women that have that particular genetic mix.
People living in bubbles in north america have no idea what it's like in Asia. Asians have elaborate medical procedures for making people whiter. Because in Asia, the darker you are, the lower you are on the status ladder. It's absurd to what degree asians agonize over skin tones.
