Two years after she underwent a double mastectomy to cut her cancer risk, actress and U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie has had surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes for the same reason, she wrote in The New York Times on Tuesday.
Jolie, 39, carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Her mother was diagnosed with the latter at age 49 and died seven years later.
In her New York Times op-ed Tuesday, Jolie said she had been planning the latest preventive surgery for some time.

She is brave to face this in so drastic a manner.
Since the breast removal was done before any sign of cancer I’m certain they did a very excellent breast reconstruction. This surgery can have excellent results.
The loss of fallopian tubes and ovaries leaves her unable to bear a child in a normal fashion but would not preclude saving eggs from the removed ovaries for later implantation if my understanding of the matter is correct. I’m assuming they are leaving the uterus intact.
Correction their net worth is close to : $400 Million, not $300 Million
Genetic markers are one thing. Environmental triggers are quite another in the expression of a gene, as cancer.
She could just as well optioned for anti-oxidant, immunogenic dietary and lifestyle changes and reduced those odds. Exception being the breast cancer potential.
The percentages would be better understood with clearer outlining of triggers for the markers. Like maybe microwave exposure, sun overexposure, fatty acid/esters in diet, free radical sinks/dietary. There is much more to be quantified for rational choices.
Yes, a piehole-ectomy would suit a lot of Hollyweird big mouths.
When it comes to your health, you gotta do what you gotta do. Of course, for Brad’s sake, I hope she’s had some reconstructive surgery.
She has the finances to deal with things, and be constantly screened.
What about the people who don’t?

And I doubt she thought it through.
She will now suffer an immediate drop in estrogen, and must now do hormone replacement immediately or else.
And even with HRT, she will have medical issues from that.
Not to mention certain cancers that come about from a decrease in certain hormones.

I’m fine with her removing what she feels is at risk. I think that the men are afraid that if there is testicular cancer in their history that they will be expected to do that surgery. LOL My nephew we now call the one ball wonder for that very reason.

I very much agree. Given that she doesn’t intend on having children in the future, it’s a tough, but understandable choice

No, I think she’s scared herself to death (actually, to her own destruction of her body) in fear of the possibility of cancer.
Liberals have done the same thing about global warming: Destroy today’s economies and cause the assured death of millions (and the continued harm to billions for the next 200 years - in the “chance” that these CO2 reductions “might” reduce a natural (beneficial) increase in global average temperatures by 1/2 of one degree.
how conservative is it to denigrate someone who does have the resources to do this, for doing so, by complaining that not everyone has the financial capability. not very. she is raising the awareness of these diseases and if women who wouldn’t otherwise, hear this and at the very least schedule an overdue mammogram or pap smear then it will be to the good. I am not a particular fan of her, pretty much pay little attention to Hollywood types, but the criticisms of her choice in this matter strike me as just petty and meanspirited for no reason.
My father had cancer, once. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. If I am supposed to die from cancer, so be it. I believe eternal life is more important.

after losing all her maternal relatives to ovarian cancer which has no early symptoms, this is a lady who was monitoring every signal and acted appropriately imo
so what if she paid for expensive medical tests? Is there a better thing she could invest in than her health?

OK I’m being ridiculous, and maybe I’d have a different opinion if I were in her shoes, but I really think this is over the top. Having some major disposition to a disease does not necessarily mean you’re going to get it. And it’s not wise to have surgery when you don’t need it. There are risks to every procedure. So what happens if she has these organs removed, but something goes wrong in surgery and she dies from complications?
We are all going to die from something. Just doesn’t seem right to me to mutilate oneself to try to prevent the inevitable.
No criticism here. That gene is nothing to mess around with, her probability was VERY high for getting deadly forms of cancer.
I know a woman (with two sisters) who watched her mother and one sister die from breast cancer. When her second sister was diagnosed with a bad prognosis, she didn’t waste any time in getting a double mastectomy. She had a wonderful marriage and two young children and wanted to be there for her family, and this was well before this gene was identified and could be tested for.
I remember when Nancy Reagan was diagnosed, and she took all kinds of criticism for getting a full mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy with chemo and radiation.
I’m not going to judge these women for leaving no stone unturned in trying to nip the situation in the bud.

The answer is: You won’t see it in the press at all because you and I aren’t “FAMOUS.”
My mother in law had cancer four times.
My grandmother died of it.
She’s taking this action out of fear, and the press is tossing it out there for whatever reason because we are supposed to, apparently, be wrapped up in her life.
